Loud clunk after 22" wheel install
Happened on my 07 s550 and now 07 cl550.
After installing 22s on both cars in my driveway I'm getting a horribly loud clunk from the right rear. Assuming the corner jacking pulled the axle out? My Indy shop said the axles rarely go bad and I remember reaching into the s550 and maneuvering the axle by hand. If it happened to both of my cars under the same circumstances then I'm assuming it's not uncommon..... Any insight guys?
Thanks in advance

22s are way to big for that car, you are going to break stuff with that skinny of a tire if you have not already broken something. 20" wheels is about the max for both cars. Jacking up a car does not pull the axle out. Never mind the whole ghetto factor of this size wheel.

My CPO came with the optional 20 inch wheels. Nice looking but I would not have picked them. Ride comfort suffers and road noise increases. Also emphasizes the small rear brake rotor. 20 inch wheels really need the S63 brake rotors and calipers to look good. Can't imagine the standard S550 brake setup with 22 inch wheels.

Appreciate the opinions on the size but that's not relative to the question asked as we all know 22s are very common on the S and probably just as popular on the CL given actual # of owners.
While doing some research I found that it might be the wheel stud length. Will try shorter studs and will update the post accordingly for others with the same question. Thanks

I think if they were common you'd probably be seeing more feedback in the thread from other guys with 22". But it's possible the type of ball on the lugs is wrong rather than length. If you can get 5 or 6 good turns and they torque up to spec the length is ok.
Aftermarket wheels typically take an Audi Ball where MB takes its own ball size. They look very similar but won't seat up right. Double check that.

Sure the lugs are correct? Most aftermarket us conical seat whereas the stocks are ball seat. I've made that mistake before on another car and had the same thud from the rear.

your wheels probably need shorter lugs. I had to get a new set, because my stock ones were too long...
22's aren't that bad on a W221. Ideally, the car should have 21's on it
I almost got my hands on a set of 21" Carlsson wheels, would have loved to have these

I guess it depends on the wheel. I just think that big of a wheel looks silly on a luxury sedan. Plus the tires are just too thin. You get a crappy ride quality and high risk of bent rims as well. There is a reason Mercedes does not go beyond 20" on the factory wheels.

The 205 is like the 221's kid sister. A little less refined, a little more fun.

My 22" niche Milan m135's ride great,of course if the road is rough the ride does suffer some but this also not my everyday driver. It's my weekend car. No thumping noise or rubbing going on here and since its on factory Air it still rides awesome on a half decent road. Only negative is pot holes, you can't text and drive (which you should not do anyways) but if you do your "GUARANTEEEEED" 2 get a bent wheel. Nonetheless, when I pull up to another s class, they stay looking at mine, and it's not because it looks ghetto, it's cause she is a bad bi*tch! Lol

To be fair, when I pull up next to an Impala with a metallic orange paint job I tend not to be able to look away from that either.
Your car looks good, very clean, but to my eye the proportion of wheel to sidewall looks off. I don't really care about how it rides since I don't have to ride in it. My objection is purely subjective and purely aesthetic.
I think the "right" rim size is 21".

I would agree that 21" is awesome as well but the tire price is ridiculously high, but thank you for compliments of the car looks good. Just ordered my s63 kit from Gary and will be here Monday. Very excited

As a cpl guys mentioned, it's prolly the length of the lug nuts. When I got my new wheels installed the other day, I was told the factory lugs were too long. I stayed with the 20's.

It was the length of the lug nuts.
Thank you to the people with actual responses instead of condescending opinions based on your location and preferences. I expect the childishness from a Honda forum, you guys should have more class than that.

Check the lug bolts, the factory ones were way too long and had the wrong shape for the aftermarkets, I had to go a lot shorter and conical taper for the aftermarket ones.
Edit: just noticed you solved the problem, disregard.
