Just this past weekend I drove the 2014 BMW Alpina in that blue, 2014 W222, Porsche Panamera S and the 2014 Audi S8. The S8 will be my next car.
Fastest of them all and precise handling. But I'm partial to them from having 3 already.
Still love my W221 tho, and will probably keep it another year. Needed the long wheel base at the time because of my kids at the right age of having their legs straight into the back of the seats. With the W221 they don't reach.

yea was my thinking to for the w221 I have 2 car seats back there now, coming from a short wheel base 750i was really alot more room. I havent driven any of those 3 you mentioned but def all top contenders. Just really love that alpina blue.

yeah. The color drew me to it and probably my #2 pick
I liked the W222 the Panamera is such a big car but felt cramped inside. Backseat was horrible even for kids

was looking at perhaps a pre owned 2013 alpina as the prices seem ok, the warty on those scare me tho. Especially with the 750's many known issues. I have another 1.5 years on my factory warty on this car so i have some time to figure it all out.

If I went back it would be for a 220 based CL circa 04-06. Always wanted one of those. The 221 and I never really hit it off and the 222 doesn't do much for me, and they're still insanely expensive. The 205 is a 3 year lease so unless somebody totals it I'll be keeping it.

Funny you say that, I recently came across this car for sale... super low mileage for a 2003 44km = 27k miles... but the guy is out to lunch on the price. car looks mint though

Yeah, that's the car. No AMG body kit being a 600 but that's about it. For the mileage and condition the price obviously has some wiggle room but it's not crazy. MSRP was probably north of $150k back in the day.

I'm on my second CL600, black on black/amg pack. They have cost me just over 10k wholesale so far, with 70-80k miles. Nice thing about those cars is they are really a no-mans-land car. Too expensive for poor people, too old and dated for wealthy people. So broke mechanics like me, can buy them cheap, maintain them cheap enough, and have an awesome car that stickered for 130k but not pay anything near that.

Yeah, classic look, although there's something about the C pillar that looks pinched and weird, and the rear bumpers had no exhaust cut outs so the tailpipes just sort of jut out from underneath. But the rest of the car, and the interior, is really nice. I like having an actual gear selector. The Bose audio is quite a bit better than the HK in the 221 too.
Strangely, when I search Auto Trader for CLs, there are way more CL55 and CL65s out there than the base 500.

A CL500 is like all the headache with none of the power... it just doesn't seem worth it.
The engines aren't problematic, the base car is, with ABC being standard on every CL, you're gonna get the big maintenance bills no matter what. Might as well do it with 500+hp.
I did a PPI on a nice '05 CL500 last month, I was greatly underwhelmed during the drive. I couldn't believe how painfully slow it felt compared to my 600, or the occasional 55 I get to drive.
