minor scratches

Hi: Recently bought a 2008 s550. Love it. It has a few minor scratches, not cutting through the paint. Would like to see if I can spiff it up.......without making it worse. On my 1999 s320, I must have used something abrasive, and it was not good. Any safe recommendations? Thanks

I wouldn't try to do something, the end results may end up being even worse, go to a body shop they usually know how to fix these kind of scratches with the right expertise and tools..

I do a decent amount of paintwork in my spare time when I'm not wrenching on cars for work. The process of doing it the correct way is time consuming and requires several different products, but the idea is basically to use as heavy an abrasive as you need to cut enough clearcoat to eliminate the scratch, and then use progressively finer abrasives to remove the scratches left by the previous step. An example would be starting with 1500 grit sandpaper, then 2000, 2500, then 3000 and 5000 grit 3M trizact paper. After that, a buffing wheel with Meguiars 105 heavy cut compound then 205 medium cut compound, then a glaze, then wax. That's the process I normally use at least. Hope that helps!

Don't try this at home or your garage in your case , a generic word but it applies for such situations as well . A good shop can make it like new

If you dont know what you are doing have a detail place do it. You will likely do more paint damage then good. An easy and quik way to remove minor rubs not in the clear is with meguires step 1 paint cleaner. If that doesnt work an abbrasive will need to be used.
