Broken Key Fob

Hi Guys
I broke my key fob for my 2007 S550, can I just purchase from dealership by showing my insurance papers and drivers licence and program myself or does car need to be towed to dealership and have them program new fob.
Any info appreciated and any idea on what this is going to cost me.

Depending on which fob it is, the bad one can probably be fixed. But if you only have one, you probably can:t wait.

But even if you have to get a new one, you can get the bad one fixed.

yes go to any dealership (about ~$300) or any indy shop which should be a bit cheaper.
i think u will need registration and driver license.

as far as programming you just have to put it in , just like you do to start the car. and that should work.

I just phoned 2 stealerships out here and they both quoted around $500 to $800 and told me I had to bring in car for programming, the 3rd dealership quoted around $350 and said no need to bring in car as key will be programmed in Germany when ordered.

People should not post opinions/guesses as facts.

"I think" and "that should work" being the giveaways.

Very few locksmiths can make these keys, almost no "indy"s can.

And you don't program them by putting in ignition.

Buy a new key from dealer and then get old one fixed.

well first of all its been so long that i dont remember exact price
and second is you can go to indy shop to actually order through them an original keyfob. (i wasnt talking just about the key if you didnt get it)

and you still will need a registration and driver license neither at indy (which is just cheaper than a dealer usually , thats why i suggested it) or a dealer.

so please before tellin me what to do clarify things first. thanks

and yes it comes programmed from germany , thats why you can only get it from there.

That's weird! I remember reading on this forum a few times that the new keys come from Texas.

Keys come from Ft worth. You will need your registration and ID. Dealer orders it and will make sure it works with your car. Cost me 350.00 for a key

I ordered mine from dealership in Langley, BC, Canada
Cost me $544.00 for fob and new metal key as they said my old metal key wont fit into new style case.
I was told it will come programmed from Germany and no need to bring my car.

The cost depends on the vehicle having keyless go or not which is probably the variance in prices people are being charged. To answer your question.

1.You need to be the current registered owner of the car.
2.Call your dealer on their policy. MBUSA requires the car to be present to order or receive the key some will allow roadside to be dispatched to the car (usually additional fee) this has not always been the case, but the rules have changed I don't know the rules in BC.
3. Keys in the USA are made in fort worth Texas and come pre-programmed (most vehicles) for older vehicles.
4. You need ID + Current registration or Pink slip (not insurance papers)
5. Usually dealers will not sell keys to anyone besides the owner so don't put too much effort into finding an indie or lock smith to get your key.

My info is based on USA so if they are different in BC that could be where the confusion is.

And as long as there is a viable NEC chip on broken FOB and you don't have dealer SDS code it as "lost" the chip can be transferred to new key for LOTS less money than a new key.
