I need new brakes on my 2013 S550 and 2013 ML 350. Dealer quoted me 720 installed for our Ml350 and I got a price of 425 from a local shop using their higher end brake pads. I'm being told now my S-class needs new pads. Should I stick with OEM or save a lot of money and buy aftermarket?

If you are happy with the oem brakes stick w them. I swapped mine to akebono ceramic I feel the car stops better and no dust either. about 150 for the set of of 4 wheels. shoot if your in Ny you can have my pads that i took off the car w 3-4k miles, oem from the dealer.

Most of the time you will also need new rotors. Did your price quite include rotors?

I can answer for him. Yes, the price includes new rotors....and sensors too. Dealers will change out the rotors every time they put in new pads. The rotors on our cars are too thin to be cut.

The $641 I was quoted was for pads and rotors. But I really would like to get rid of the brake dust problem. Are the aftermarket brakes significantly better at reducing brake dust?

yes use akebono ceramics and be done w brake dust. the pads are around 150.00 for the set of 4 sides.

personally id get the akebono pads and the zimmerman z coated rotors and either do myself or bring to your mechanic. The brakes are easy on this car.

I'm looking to replace my brakes due to dust problems and squeaking.

I already purchased the Akebono ceramic pads for all 4 wheels, now I need the rotors.

I cannot find Zimmerman Z Coat rotors anywhere online for AMG pkg cars....and the parts catalog on their website is in German.

I really like the fact that Z Coat prevents the normal horrible looking rusty rotors and would prefer them over OEM even if they are slightly more money.

Anyone know if they make them and who sells them.....link? Looking to purchase ASAP.

This is what I did. Car had about 20k miles on it, just swapped for the Akebono pads and it's unreal. I can drive the car for weeks with NO DUST. Literally unreal.

Akebono is a solid brand. I have them on my BMW and once they are bedded they make a world of difference compared to OEM. I too will need brakes on my S soon. Dealer quoted $1250 for full set of brakes and one set of rotors. I forgot if it was front or rear. They are nuts. I can do them myself in my driveway or have my indy do it for $300.

any ideas on other rotor brands to look for, striking out with Zimmerman. I am a fan of the coated rotors, but not finding Zimmerman available through my local channels.

FWIW, the stock pads have better bite and less fade than ALL of the low dust after-market pads. You'll notice the difference the most on wet or snowy roads....and also if you take your car to the track. But for most folks, the low-dust pads are fine since these are cars that are not usually driven too hard.

I have always preferred oem/stock vs. Aftermarket but I also hate brake dust. Just trying to find a middle ground.

I only switched out the stock pads for Akebono and they work great with stock rotors. I can drive for a month with basically no dust. Before, not even a few daysbefore black!

I am looking to get a portable lift so I can do the brakes in all my cars myself. You can get a reliable one for $1400. All I need for basic maintenance is to raise the car a minimum of 28 inches off of the floor/ground.

alot of really good brands. Brembo makes a coated rotor also. I just recently used meyle coated rotors on my x5 (noone had zimmermans in stock) great price and so far its been a few months and no issues. Otherwise Ive had the akebonos on my s550 for over 2 years and they are great. The car stops better.


I see you wrote local channels, noone will have them in stock, just order them online its cheaper and they ship to your door.

awesome, I use a low profile aluminum jack from sears. planning a garage extension soon will try to get a lift in there.

Yeah, I am really considering this as the cost of having the brakes done alone would almost pay for one of these portable lifts.

you know what your right! Thats pretty crazy. My current garage is a small 1 car, so I dont get to crazy in there. But w a good low profile jack you can do most stuff. I enjoy doing the brakes, and i usually clean up the calipers and give them a fresh coat of hi temp paint at the same time.
