After watching it I can't say i'm surprised, especially from a roll. The S65 is almost 1000lbs heavier. You can get the old S65's for about the same as the M5 to

BoB, Are you drunk? It seemed like they were neck and neck in the first race. As far as from a standstill... that's a great way to possibly destroy your drivetrain eventually! That's the only way I'd ever run somebody in any of my cars which I don't do anyway. I guess I'm just a pus! Mags

p.s. Bob, Just having a little fun with ya!

What else is new? M5 has apparently killed Ferraris, Lambos, Porsches, and just about every AMG. Do we need any more evidence that the M5 is the greatest car of all time?

P.S.-Those vids from E55Jay and SleeperX were all fake, Gustav's vids are the only ones that show what happens in the real world.

for what its worth i dont think this vid is fake. The stock 65 is the heavy guy on the block and I think it traps around 118-119 stock and the m5 barley edged it out up top with what a half car length, if anything its the truest race i have seen yet.

Agreed, its just that I've never seen a guy (Gustav) so bent out on seeing M's win over AMG's. Its his mission in life.

I love M's and have total respect for them, I just find it funny how Gustav posts about a video and adds a "" to it and watches us argue lol.

It's a marketing arrangement. BMW gives him their M cars to use in high speed runs every so often, he posts the videos (for sale, recently), both sides are happy and making money. BMW gets essentially free marketing aimed right at the heart of the target demographic, can't beat that.

I mean, think about it: if you or I called up BMW and said "Hey, I'm an enthusiast, and would like for you to lend me, oh, say a $90,000 M5, and, while you're at it, a $100K M6, so that I can run high speed races on an airstrip.", what do you think the odds are of our getting the keys handed over to us?

BMW doesn't do this out of the goodness of their hearts. View it for what it is: a commercial for BMW, BMW tuners, and now a chance for Gusty to make a quick buck doing it. Audi does it too with Audiworld (not sure if they sell vids, but they do get the loaners/do the writeups); only questions I have are 1) wtf doesn't Mercedes do it here? and 2) wtf don't they use me as a test driver/writeup hack when they do??

The difference is that the Audiworld guys aren't classless bores who spam other enthusiast boards like Gustav does, while simultaneously stifling discussion of the other brands on his own (although he doesn't seem to be quite the netnazi he used to be, showing some definite signs of improvement).

Where BMW and Audi are pretty relaxed w.r.t. internet media and internet journalism (bloggers), Mercedes is still very old fashioned. I deal with all companies for loaners for our blog and every time it strikes me as how relaxed the BMW people are with internet and blogging. Audi is a bit more reluctant, but with a bit of massaging they are pretty relaxed about it too. Mercedes on the other hand is very uptight about their image and is never relaxed about it. That's why we get the good stuff (CL65, S65, etc) from a befriended Mercedes dealership who do get the internet.

Mercedes essentially still is an old-farts brand with an old-fart moral. Nobody @ Mercedes is realy aware that AMG make cars that are a bit more exciting and can benefit from some authentic internet marketing (M5Board and Audiworld as you describe).

I can tell you guys for sure that this vid is not a fake. How can I be sure of that? Well, I’m the driver and owner of the S65 AMG in this clip.

A stock BMW M5 has got 507 hp (Euro spec). This M5 was tuned by Kellener. That means other camshafts, exhausts, Supersprint headers and ECU-tuning and about a total of 560 – 570 hp. My car is bone stock (Euro spec, 612 hp). My guess is that the power on the wheels is almost identical between these two cars if you consider the power loss of the automatic gearbox with torque converter. The M5 is equipped with SMG gearbox with much less power loss.

Consider these facts: Two cars with similar wheel power, the M5 is much lighter and also has got better aerodynamics than the S65. If you look at things this way the M5 should have beaten me. Why was it then so even? The only explanation I have is that the power of the S65 is a bit underrated and it delivers more hp than Mercedes says it does. Also the massive torque is a big advantage for the S65.

Btw, the speed at the finish line was almost 170 mph. I don’t know what the result would have been if we could have gone longer. Maybe the better aerodynamics on the BMW had made it faster than me? What do you guys think?

I can also tell you that the Kellener M5 has raced a stock M5 and the Kellener was much faster. I never raced the stock M5 but then I know fore sure that I would have beaten him since I was quite even with the Kellener.

Notice how the M5 redlined badly on its 4-5 shift at around 200km/h...
its an unfair race (modded vs stock) if both cars were stock, results would be the other way around...
