Radar detector mounting?

I was reading an old post while trying to figure out the best place to mount my V1 radar detector on the s65, and they OP talks about the coating on our dashboards that interferes with detectors. Indeed, I mounted mine so it is half under the black section of the dash behind the mirror, half exposed, and I have noticed a dramatic decrease in detector sensitivity with the usual false alerts (supermarkets, etc) and also a decrease in police radar sensitivity. In the original post there is a reference to checking the manual for best places to mount, but my car did not come with a manual. It also references mounting the radar directly in the black section, which seems a bit counter-intuitive. Does anyone know the best place to mount the detector on our cars, also taking into account trying to avoid theft, sun damage, and visibility to police? If it is up in the black section, does it work as well up there? I hard wire the unit. Thanks in advance! Old post below:

I have mine in the middle, lower section of the windshield. I've heard they detect better higher, but I have not had problems with it lower, and it feels more hidden there. I also hardwire it, I have a 9500 Escort.

Ideally I'd want to get one of the remote mounted units - like the 9500CI, that way you can always have good detection, but it's hidden.

The manual says two spots only. The area around the rear view mirror (with dots) and a trapezoidal area in the lower right side of the windshield.

I use a Solo II cordless and mount it by the rear view mirror and it rests on the mirror. Good spot since it is not visible to outsider, no need to remove it when you park.

I know its been a while, can you post a pic of your setup? and how you go the wire in that area for power?

Thanks
