Supercharger going bad!!!!

Dropped my 2006 S55 at the dealership today for them to diagnose a problem that i thought was my catalytic Convertor because i had a loss of power, rattling sound and a bad rotting egg smell from exhaust.I received a call from them and they are telling me that the supercharger is going bad and its taking in air but not releasing it! total price to replace it all is $7000.00.Can i get some input on this guys, before i spend money to fix it?Can the engine still run without getting air???

How many miles and is your car stock? Rotten egss are usually bad cats and not SC related. 7K is crazy high and you can find used SC all over the place.

The SC comes off easy , so you can check the rotors for damgwe , as they do not fail often.

Would the bad supercharger and bad catalytic converters have the same symptoms? It has the rotten egg smell when in get on the throttle and now even when it idles. The dealership tells me it's the supercharger! Somebody heard me get on it and said it had a bad rattle!! It has 106,000 on it and is completely stock! THanks

The noise might just be the front SC clutch bearing rattling.

You can test the bearing by hand spinning it with the engine off. If it's very loud and grinding, you probably need a new bearing.

Engine off. Open hood. Remove plastic cover that hides the SC pullley. See how the SC has a big diameter black collar immediately in front of the cast aluminum housing? Try spinning/pushing the black collar to the right or left.

You don't have to detach the SC belt to do this experiment. When idling or turned off, the pulley spins freely, turning the guts of the SC, but not the drive pulley.

This bearing occasionally wears out and rattles like crazy. It is most definitely NOT a $7K job.

There's a fantastic Youtube video of a guy swapping out his SC bearing. The task included putting the bearing in the freezer (to shrink it), and the outer race in the oven (to expand).

You can also change the oil in the SC, as it seems to burn off over time.

Very unlikely you will use more than half a litre.

What ever the hell you do make sure you dont drop that supercharger screw from the drain hole, you will regret it very deeply if you drop it!!!

Worst case scenerio, have a local mechanic install an ebay-sourced supercharger with a total out-of-pocket under $1,500.

Very true, you shouldnt be paying more than $1,500 for this job.

But the very FIRST thing you need to do is find out whats actually wrong with your current supercharger and how Mercedes have determined it to be faulty?

I too would say that these superchargers very rarely go wrong, but from my own cars history it seems that they can. I have a receipt from Mercedes dealers which shows the supercharger on my car was changed, when the car was just 4 years old. It doesnt show the cost as the owner at the time did not pay full for it, Mercedes made a hefty good-will gesture as the car had only just come out of its 3 year warranty. But it does go to show that these can go bad. But the current supercharger is now 6 years old and doesnt seem to show any problems as of yet.

If you haven't got this fixed yet, the dealer needs to explain more technically what is happening and what they mean by it's taking on air and not releasing it.
When people talk about the front bearing noise, sure it is more often the SC pulley bearing but also the actual front bearing inside the supercharger gets worn. We just transplanted one from a used supercharger..
Also, the correct capacity of oil is 150 ml which will be a few millimeters lower than the filler hole when level.
If you have got your problem fixed already, can you please share?

piced up car today(been out of town)

I did not get it fixed but I was out of town and couldnt pick it up,today I picked it up from dealership not repaired but a $125 service charge. When i dropped it off i told them that; The CHECK ENGINE light had came on and I had a loss in power. This is what was on the service invoice.

114950 check engine light on test drove for lines a and c fault code p0410 for secondary air malfunction, performed vacuum checks from switch over valve and vacuum supply.vacuum supply ok, switch over valve ok,(charged air) from supercharger that was needed for secondary air is nt being emited from supercharger, also did hear rattle type noise with supercharger engaged, also this may be the reason for "lack of power" from line a of ticket, submitted estimate of items EST $6905.57
