Reliability of 2012 S63 AMG

Hello! I am new here and wanted to get some feedback on the reliability of the 2012 s63. I am planning on looking at one this weekend and if all goes well may pull the trigger. I know its such a vague question, but I wanted to see what the common issues are and what I need to expect down the road. This vehicle is a 2012 Designo edition with 35000 miles. Asking price is $67800 and is almost fully loaded without the rear entertainment package.

That's a great price. I just bought one 6 weeks or so ago and paid a lot more! A lot! Mine had 10k miles but I'd say JUST BUY IT and enjoy. I got a 10 year extended warranty (7 years beyond what comes with it anyway). Does it have a wood steering wheel or a leather wheel? I hate my wood wheel. Would happily trade it for a leather one if one came about.

I have a 2011 with the rear seat package and performance package that I bought in August last year. Only issue I have with the car is the auto lock/unlock does not work on the driver door handle when it gets wet. Once it dries its fine.

One regret I have is not waiting it out for a car with the Bang and Oulfsen system. The Harmon Kardon system is a real disappointment.

Be sure to check out maintenance costs etc before you buy it. A lot of people buy the car then are surprised with the cost of maintenance. Eg. Rotors are about $1000 - $1500 each, pads are roughly $700 - $1000 for front and rear.

It costs A LOT for maintenance. Mine just ran out of the factory warranty. Over the past two years that I've had it, the dealer has replaced the COMAND system, the wet clutch, the gas tank, a Distronic sensor, and a couple other things. About $22K on their dime.

New snow tires are $2,400.

Still, it's all less than a year's depreciation. Mine was $177K when new, and is now worth <$75K with <30K miles.

Love it though.

Thank you guys for the responses! I pulled the trigger yesterday and picked it up. I got the designo magno platinum matte finish, bang and olufsen sound, multi contour front and rear seats, p30 package and etc. I am surprised by the msrp new relative to what it books for now. I didn't think it was possible for these vehicles to depreciate so much. Anyway it drives, handles and sounds so much better than the ls460 that I am used to! So far I've found a few minute issues (rear driver door ambient lighting on door panel doesn't work and the auto-close function on the front driver door doesn't work.) Luckily the vehicle still has he factory warranty.

So great! Congrats... And - do you have any exterior and interior pics you could post? Does it have the rear DVD for rear passengers? I wanted this but my car didn't come with it. In reality, I'd never use them anyway, they just look cool.

Here are a few photos. Unfortunately I didn't come with the rear entertainment package.

Very nice! Cool paint job. If you ever have an interest in swapping your leather steering wheel for a wood/leather wheel that cost more initially (with 11500 of easy driving use on it!), please let me know. Pics below of mine...

The steering wheel looks good! But unfortunately I have no wood grain at all in my vehicle, so it would look out of place.

It has been fun following these exchanges and all the while waiting to buy my first S63. Happens to be a 2012 with 45k miles, getting it for $64.2k.. tomorrow! Will be trading in my 2010 E350 for it.. great car, but totally worth giving up for the S63! Mine is a CPO with about 15 months of unlimited miles left on it. Pondering whether I should straightaway go for the CPO extension of 2 years for $6695 as quoted by the dealer, or simply take it after purcahse to an EasyCare dealer and get the TotalCare package. Will cost some dough sure.
Thanks everyone!

I got the Continental Warranty on my 12k mile car I got 6 months or so ago. I think it was $5100 for a 10 yr 100k mi warranty. The deductible was VERY small or $100, I can't remember. I would NEVER own one of these without a warranty. My last 2008 S63 cost about $12k+ to fix over the almost 2 years I had it and that warranty was $5685 for a 5 year warranty. Both were Continental.

Thanks, that is helpful. May I ask why you dislike the wood/leather steering wheel? It looks nice. I actually still have a choice to make between two 2012 S63 cars- one has 38k miles, rear entertainment and a wooden steering wheel and is fully loaded but with harmon kardon speakers. The other is the 45k miles alcantara/leather steering wheel with charcoal black leather interior but no rear entertainment and bang-olufsen sound system. Latter is 4k cheaper. But I prefer the wood steering wheel and the rear entertainment system although i'll miss out on the bang/olufsen sound!!!

I love the way the wood wheel looks but I hated the way it felt in my hands... An AMG car should have a leather wheel. It's more tactile. Wood just hurts my hands after driving for a long time. After getting prices to swap out the wheel I am DEFINITELY just keeping the wood wheel now and will learn to love it.

It's is insanely expensive to swap my wheel and airbag out. INSANE.

I have now decided I like my cost saving current wheel and it does look killer in the car. I had the leather wheel in my 2007 and MUCH preferred it. MUCH. I would never get a wheel with Alcantera though unless there was no choice. I can't imagine it would wear well and it would pick up all the oil on my hands when I'm sweaty, leaving the gym, hot out, etc. That would totally gross me out, I think, unless there's a great way to clean it that I don't know about.

Not a fan. I like leather since you can clean it with a great leather cleaner like Leatherique, my favorite by far.

Do you mind giving us the contact info for getting the extended warranty from Continental? What does it cover? Is it bumper to bumper?

Are you happy with them? Have you filed any claims with the?

Thanks in advance

I know nothing whatsoever about it other than I bought it! Nothing has gone wrong with my car in the 6-8 months or since I've had it so no claims were filed yet. The last car I filed $12k or os in claims. Continental warranty covered most of it, thanks to the help from my dealer on some of it.

I got it from the MB dealer in Bethesda MD (Euromotors). Todd was the finance guy I think, and he was great. Second S63 I got from him. I just the most expensive policy that covered most anything but wear and tear. You could call him for details and reference me. I'm sure he'll remember me. 08 S63 and this 12 S63. Steve from Gaithersburg.

Thanks for the info...

If you file a claim, can you let us know how they handled it? Thanks

I'm not even sure what that means, but for my first car, the dealership did everything for me and it was smooth as silk. Sometimes it took longer so the dealer just gave me a free loaner for a week at a time which was marvelous. Just get it!!! You will be SO happy you did.

I am not questioning your dealership... I'm sure they are great and they might have a good relationship with the warranty company.

The reason I was asking is, a warranty company states that they cover a lot of parts but when a part goes bad, they sometimes don't pay for the part. I'm just trying gauge how good the warranty company is when it comes to processing a claim.
