Considering S65 or S63 from C63

Currently have 11 C63 and it's a great car but I want something bigger that still has decent performance.

Looking at 08-11 65 & 63 used around 30k miles or less. This will be a DD and my concern is reliability and maintenance costs. I don't want to get into a "can't afford" debate because I can but also like to be practical/frugal where I can.

Can you guys list the common problems/maintenance costs with these vehicles and approx price? I prefer the 65 and will try to find a CPO but not sure where to look for extended warranty beyond that.

Thanks

Both the S65 & S63 are just a little bit different

from what you are driving

There are many threads in this forum on the ABC -

the coil packs - the brakes/rotors ect...

Do maintenence as needed w/ OEM AMG parts

and do maintenence AS Needed yesterday

I have a 06 W220 S65 - The Mothership -

on my radar and have nothing but respect

for the S65 and the S600 V12's

There are alot of S63's on the road

I see them everyday

The V12's are in a league of their own

The sound of their Exhaust is outstanding

Will look for a video so you can hear it

Thank-You

'94 SL600,'05 SL600,'06 S65,'07 E63,'14 E63S,'09SL600 all sold, ‘15 S65,‘18 E63S,'17 SL65, '17S65Cab
The 2011 S63 has the 5.5L biturbo, the 2010 and older have the 6.2L NA V8. The 5.5L seems to get much better reviews. As an owner of an S65, and I absolutely love it, I recommend you find one with an extended factory warranty. The major item left off the above list is the motor mounts. I have an S65, an E63S and a coworker has a 2009 C63. It is a really big jump in size and driving feel from the C to the S. Be sure to drive one enough to know it is what you want. I also have an SL600 I use as a DD. I use the S for longer trips and with multiple passengers. The E also works as a good DD, but it depends on your driving and preferences which suits you best. If you get an S65 be sure to get an aftermarket tune. They make an amazing difference.

As you know the C and S Class cars are vastly different. You get a more robust ride with the S (longer wheelbase) while the C has a more punishing ride which makes the S Class a more comfortable as a daily driver.

The operating and maintenance costs on the S will be higher since everything on the S63/65 is more expensive.

All 3 cars C63, S63 and S65 will have pretty much similar acceleration(around 4 seconds) and overall performance, the major difference with the S65 with 700+ lbft of torque is that you get much more performance at higher speeds, i.e. 70 mph to 100 mph jumps. This is not necessarily useful on US roads but a huge advantage for passing on the autobahn.

Also, the interior, amenities and comfort features of the S Class cars far exceed what you have in the C.

Good luck with your decision.

^agreed. owning both, the S65 is way more comfortable for daily driving but it isn't "sporty" by any means. It has straight line power and the torque pushes you back into the seat much harder than the C. Maintenance will be more (i.e. 24 spark plugs, abs suspension). way more luxurious.

I just picked up a 2007 S65 and have had it less than a week so far. That being said the sound of a V12 is like nothing else. I actually leave my door open so I can hear it "light" up to life. It sounds nothing like my previous S55K motor. The only way to really describe it is the V12 sound is intoxicating. At low or regular speed and acceleration it seems very "normal" like a cool sounding everyday car. BUT when you push down and the turbos engage look the F out!
I didn't think it would be much different than my S55 but it is. The amount of force it puts on you during acceleration is unreal. It is simply awesome!
I am also like you and can afford the car just hate to waste cash when not needed, my wife just calls me "captain cheapskate."
Buying the S65 was a long time goal for me and I will never look back. I love the V12TT.

I had a 2004 S55 before getting the S65. I find the S65 noises are subdued, I suppose as it was intended by AMG. The most exciting part is a cold start which has a fabulous rumble but things quiet down afterwards.

When at indoor parking garages I always lower the window and blip the throttle, reserved and subdued but the whooshing sound is very unique to this engine and this car.
