s65 air intake

Anyone have any suggestions for an upgraded air intake? Renntech has 1 but they want $5,000 which is ridiculous. I have a 2006 s65 amg

Search on the threads for the sl65 some people have crazy set ups; a lot of it is DIY

https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-...ke-thread.html

Being my daily driver I opted for K&N drop in filters at 60k. I figure I would need a good tune to go with an custom intake to work properly

Go for something like this instead, cold air intakes don't do anything. These cars are not Honda's...

Thanks for the link trixer but after reading the sl65 forums posted above i learned really quick that the scorpions top mount doesn't work that great. And if you think because they are not honda's a cold air wont help then you're in looney land.

yup. especially with the turbos intakes can make a huge difference from what I've learned in those threads. The biggest issue with the scorpion seems to be the heat it pulls in especially when hot.

When you get the intakes custom made, would love to see how they turn out! Some of these m275 people are making crazy gains with just a tune and intake, not to mention the turbos get louder

Ideally I would have tune, a custom intake with a large diameter tube, Speedriven catless downpipes and speed riven blow off valve

Will do akmatic, i plan on starting into the engine come January. Im just doing all the cheap stuff right now on account of remodeling my house. Then im going to be hitting the expensive mods. But after reading in the sl65 forums its become very clear that the fliters/intake needs to be outside the engine bay. The v12's produce insane amounts of heat. I remember my first mercedes was a 07s600 and i remember lifting the hood one day after it had been sitting for like 3 hours and it was still hot. I live in Fl but still. So i have a buddy thats good with aluminium manufacturing.

Hmmmm... so you think this would make a big difference on an S63 as well? I wonder how come Renntech or Eurocharged never fabricated one as yet? I only see the carbon fiber boxes.

Ya their carbon fiber boxes are built to let more air in. But its mostly show and for $5000 they can keep that ****. But the guys on the sl65 forums are making huge power like 1000hp and stuff and they are all custom fabricating intakes outside the engine bay. So thats what im going to do as well. Now if renntech was reasonable with their prices. Like maybe 800$ or something i would try them first. But for 5000 i wont even consider what they are selling.

And im sure it would help on a s63. Cold air helps turbos. Or any engine for that matter. But i dont know how much it would matter v12 vs v8

Generally intakes and CAI makes a bigger impact on forced induction engines and getting the air straight to the turbos. It would make a difference on the 5.5L Bituro s63 with a good tune

Not that big of a difference on the m156 motor since it is naturally aspirated, like my c63, I upgraded the airboxes to the "rest of world" spec which lets more air in. The US airboxes are restrictive, idk about the canadian spec ones. I Put in K&N Filters to go along with that. Seems like the boxes work good for the naturally aspirated motors

That is awesome to say the least. I was hoping after my tune from Eurocharged I would be "happy" with the power it makes. Then I see **** like this and think well maybe I should give that a try can't be that bad right? I also really want to be able to hear the turbos a bit more. Has anyone tried the Speedriven BOV?

I got a ecu tune from Speedriven and a suspension module. Also i would advise a muffler and cat delete. Omg the sound is so amazing and really not too loud. Pkus you get really good hp gains from just simply cutting them off. No need for an expensive exhaust. Just cut out and reweld. Should cost like 500$

Primary cat delete?? When i looked under my car all i saw was the primary cats, pipes and what looks like an H-pipe and mufflers... Still haven't learned or figured out if the s65 came with secondary cats and resonators like other amg cars.

Would love to hear some sound clips!

There's a way you can make the V12 cars sound like the pagani zonda.

That's an older NA v12, not the later turbo one.

Yes the V12 has secondary cats and you should remove them. Put in some Kleeman down pipes with some 200 cell cats and 3" straight pipe the rest.

The speedriven intercoolers are good however the scorpion under bonnet intake and the stock intake do not create sufficient flow of cold air once these cars are tuned.

So a custom intake like the one above is needed, larger diameter and pulling cold air from in front of the radiator.

I have had a custom radiator built in order to allow more space for the CAI. It will be a quad CAI with 2 larger intakes behind the center grille and 2 smaller intakes going to the DRL area..

I will be running 2 inter cooler pumps and 2 fans all going through a control unit which can adjust each pump and fan speed independently depending on the temperature that you program each item to cut in at, they will also be variable speed so they can ramp up and down individually as required.

I am hoping i have now done enough to counter the v12 heat issues and allow the new upgraded turbos to create the power we are looking for.

My thread is at Wide body sl600 v12.

The pics above are from my car, here is the link to more pics. It really maximized the flow and was a huge gain with the catless downpipes. The stock air boxes couldn't draw air in as fast as the motor was exhausting once the cats were out. I did not have it retuned afterwards and the car put down great power(645whp) and ran great. A few months later I got Eurocharged latest tune with a few other refinements. I didn't have any issues, it was available, they were at a dyno event, and older customers get free retunes. My land speed times are proof, 1/4 times were with stock exhaust and airboxes, just no filters.

I agree catless would be best however I don't want to modify each year when it is time for the MOT in England.

Love your set up! I wish the w220s had that kind of space in the front. I couldn't find this thread as I never saved it but now I'm studying it so when I have some free time I can create a similar set up. Having the cone filters out of the engine bay is key so figuring that out will be fun!

I went on pegasus auto as your thread showed, but having trouble finding the 4" coupler?

Thanks, I realize there is less space, but be creative and make room, that's what I did.Lol.. As far as the 4" couplings, I ordered silicone ones off eBay to extend the straight between the bevels and I had sheet metal ones made for inside so the hose clamp had something to keep the connections ridgid and prevent it from collapsing. It's just flat metal rolled and spot welded to a 4" diameter. It worked great and allow for adjustments as you try to fit all the pieces. I hope that helps.
