W220 s65 wheel/tire advice and experience needed

Greetings all-
My '06 s65 landed friday, and while I love the car, I'm not enthralled with the wheels currently on it. 20" of unknown width and offset, but obvious stretch in the back. 255/35r20 front and 275/30r20 in back.

I personally like 5spoke wheels, and my ideal would be either HRE or stock 5's. I'm not set upon keeping the Conti tires it has, but unless I find a 19" wheel tire combo, it would be easier to keep the 20" tires it has.

All that said, from what I have found:
* The stock wheels are 19x8.5 front et44, 9.5 rear et60.
* Tire rack has various 20's, from 8.5-9.5 front, et 35,38,45 and 9.5-10 rear, et 38, 52
* There are various stock wheels I like, off '07 s65, or cls, '08 s63, '10 e63 and cl63, '14 e63.... Both 19" and 20" fitments.
* I'm not trying to get "the widest wheels/tires possible", but am not adverse to bigger. My roads are really pretty good, with minimal potholes...but they are out there.
* I've read Nick's assessment that wider (square?) fitment on the front of his s600 has benefited greatly but have not found anyone who has tried the same on an s65. I would be totally fine with something similar, if it will work/fit.

I know the collective knowledge and experience on here is far greater that what I will encounter at any typical wheel and tire emporium. What have any of you seen that has worked, and what has been tried that simply does not?

If a mod would advise this be moved to the wheel and tire forum, that makes sense too.....but I'm not sure how likely an s65 owner might go there to see it.

Thanks in advance everyone,
D

I have had my S65 for 10 years and like it as much now as when I purchased it. Like you I really prefer 5 spoke wheels so I kept the stock split 5 spoke wheels. I up sized the tires to 255x40/19 front and 285x35 rear and am completely satisfied with them. The rear tires on your 20's should be 285's to complement the 255's on the front. If the offset in the rear is close to 60mm 295x30's will also work. Unlike Nick, I prefer the staggered fitment. With 255's front and 285's rear and 48psi front/ 36 psi rear the car is just about neutral handling. This is based on unintended personal experience on Friday at 85 mph in a lightly banked curve.

Thanks for the info. Now I just have to find the "right" wheels!

Anyone have an idea if there is a Mercedes 5spoke 20" near these offsets?
Thx

I pulled up the MB 2008 owners manual online to check the S65 wheels. The 2008 20" S65 wheels have a 43mm offset so they will not work. I assume the 2007 through 2012 would be the same.
I took a close look at the rear clearance with my 285's. I think a 52 offset 9.5" wheel would work with a 275x30 tire. My guess would be the 10" would not fit but one would have to try it to be certain.
