We have covered this topic hundreds of times---to do correctly you need to compare both VIN's,however I can assure you that if the buttons were not on the original car---it won't work-----use your time to read to your children!!

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I did search using words like 'sl 500 steering wheel upgrade, conversion and retrofit' and I saw threads were people have retrofitted wheels from other cars but nothing about retrofitting a newer sl wheel to an old sl, if you can provide a link I'd love to read it/ them.

My steering wheel is the standard SL500 wheel as shown at the top with the up/down & information buttons on the left; and the volume up/down & telephone buttons on the right. The new wheel has the same buttons/ functions but they've added two round buttons in the middle of each button assembly. My thought is: the small round buttons may not work but if the rest of the buttons can be either rewired, coded or programmed, that'd be great! I have my vin number but if I am buying a used wheel off ebay etc, I'd have no way of obtaining the vin from the vehicle it came off. I appreciate your time & help...

Finding the wheels not so bad. Bennett searching all day yesterday and only found 1 black airbag online and I need the stone color. If I have to buy it new at over 2k I might just be customizing a regular wheel!
