Instrument cluster does not light up when headlights are on. Dealer said it must be replaced...to the tune of $2300 plus $400 labor! Any alternative solutions?

Not really. There are ways to get a used cluster working, but it requires some EEPROM programming (possibly micro-soldering) and SDS coding.

There's this guy I know who does this kind of stuff for a living, he ones charged me $180 to fix the lighting on my 04 clk55 cluster. I live in Florida.

The dealer cannot program a used cluster unless you first go elsewhere and have the mileage in its EEPRO zeroed. Their SDS system will absolutely not marry the cluster or adjust the mileage when it is above zero (actually I think it has a 100-mile grace range).

depending on what is wrong with it may be able to be fixed. there are speedo specialty repair places. I would check with one before buying a new one.

This is the place i use, they fixed a few for us for different types of vehicles.
