New S Class Cabriolet: IMO, a Missed Opportunity.
Many folks are calling the new S Class Cabriolet "Beautiful," but as with everything, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
I was just SO excited about this car, after seeing the Ocean Drive concept of several years ago, when plans for a new S Class drop top were announced. I waited and waited for the new S Cabriolet to come out. I had told my dealer that I was ready to place my order. Then I saw the car in person, in both "Sport" and regular trim. I drove the car. It drove nicely. Sure, I was going to get one, I had been planning for it for years, it was a SURE thing......but then the idea just started to fade on me.
With me, this car has been like "The Emperor's New Clothes." It's a brand new, S Class Cabriolet, so it MUST be beautiful, sexy, stunning, incredibly appealing and I MUST be lusting after it, right? Well, actually not.
I have come to the conclusion that the design is very unexciting, which is how I have felt about the coupe. As a matter of fact, I think the design is boring and unappealing. When I look at the completely uninspired color palette for both the interior and exterior, I could fall asleep!
I'm happy for the new owners of these cars, who just love them, but for me, the new S Cabriolet was a missed opportunity by MB. They could have created something very special, exciting, elegant and inspiring--a "halo" car, but in the end, they simply cut the top off their boring coupe and gave us left overs for dinner. They should have built the Ocean Drive pictured here.
Oh well. When a company tries to be everything to everybody, they end up doing little that is inspiring, which is a shame.

Couldn't disagree more. This car ****es on anything this side of the Rolls Dawn. Even the (elderly, outdated) Bentley Continental GTC is outdone by this car. BMW, Cadillac, Lexus, Audi, Jaguar and all the rest have been passed up big time by this car. Cars like this S Cabrio is why Mercedes still sits atop all of them. Only the Dawn is a equal and/or better car.

As streamliner says, it is in the eye of the beholder. I love the looks of the s-class coupe and convertible myself and think it's not easily outdone.
If my wife wouldn't have wanted a smaller convertible this would have been on the shortlist.
The ocean drive concept seems clumsy to me. Four door convertibles are challenging with the top up, design-wise.

I'm not sure if your comment was directed at me, but I would HAPPILY pay a LOT more to get what I want. For instance: I'd pay $5K extra to NOT have the Pano Roof on my W222. I'd pay $1K to have a jack & spare. I'd pay $5K to have a monochromatic Palomino interior. I'd pay $7K to have the car painted any color I want. It's not that I'm not willing to pay more, when it comes to a convertible, MB just isn't offering me a car that I find appealing.
I would of happily paid $250K for a regular production Ocean Drive. I have a huge business deal cooking over the next ten months. If it goes my way, there may be a new Dawn in my garage. Wish me luck.

If that's directed at Streamliner, I don't think that's fair. It's been said on this forum that it's bad form to question the financial motives or abilities of other members.
We should abide by that one principle of conduct.

You can't please everyone . I can't say that front of the car is ugly though . I would never buy anything with cloth roof ,that's my notion .
Well, the MB cabrio is nicer than RR Wraith , the latter is too fat and "reverse" doors is plain senseless what an anachronism for car which is equipped with a gps technology to optimize gear speed when one is either on straight on curve .Suicide doors kills the car , pun intended
I think it wouldn't be worse if they installed scissor doors

'71 Pinto
Love the Dawn (taking it up a notch from S), was following one the other day here in Scottsdale. BTW Newport Beach, fabulous – Scottsdale on steroids! Best of luck, I’m looking to upgrade from ’71 Pinto to a ‘96 Chevy Cavalier convertible if I hit it big (Brooklynese)

Love the Dawn as well. While the car clearly has the old-gen. BMW DNA in its tech, I find the car very well executed.
Clearly old-school, but in a very indulgent kind of way. And many of the color combos are quite extraordinary.
That said, I don't know about the depreciation of the Dawn, but I looked at a 2013 Phantom with 8K miles on it. More or less a new car selling for $275k with a sticker of $500k.
In depreciation alone, a daily drive to the office and back would cost me over $1000 (if purchased new) and the office is only 18 miles away!

MB’s
I rode in a friends S Cabriolet down here in Florida. If I had the money I would buy one in a second. The E Cabriolet/CLK's started the modern 4 seater convertible and while they are a very nice car they cannot ever compare to the S Class Cabriolet. I must say the only thing that bothered me was the trippy looking wood with lines and the lack of rear space for a car so large. Other then that it is truly perfection!

Good luck with that. I love it when a deal comes together.
