Age old question: When is it too much power?

So, the bug is starting to bite me to ramp up the power of the SL600. I know the basics, being ECU and TCU tune, which is definitely on the list. I already have filters and muffler delete.

But...

I'm considering pushing it a little further, preferably without burning out my coil packs sooner rather than later. In any case, I'm considering intercoolers, intake and down pipe.

Is that too much for the car to handle, or do you think that's a solid set of mods for the car that shouldn't affect driveability or reliability too much?

When is it too much power? When the $ per HP exceeds your pain threshold or bank account.
There are 1000 HP SL's out there, but at a high price.
Personally I'd start with a lighter car on a max build. F= MxA...start with lower M.

No such thing as too much power; rather, you can have too little traction. No, that will not be too much power. I have all that and more on my SL and I still wish I had more. Just waiting for someone to come out with a good turbo system that does not require me to ship my car half way across the country for it to sit in a shop for 3+ months.

Who did you use for parts?

The engine has Speedriven intercoolers with BOV's mounted on them, Speedriven downpipes, 300 cell metal cats, no rear mufflers, black series injectors, trunk coolant tank with dual pumps, and tuned by OE Tuning.

"Too much power" isn't a thing in 2016. The engine electronics and standalone engine management systems have outpaced power production and now you really can have a 1000+ HP daily driver without sacrificing driveability.

The main issue is cost. It's too much power when you can't afford to upgrade the trans., for example, to take the power. It's too much power when you can't afford the potential upkeep of higher-end brakes and tires. things like that.

As for a big turbo car being peaky and tough to drive on the streets? That's kind of a thing of the past.

Have you dynoed your car to see how much power it's putting down with that work?

Age old question: When is it too much power?

Answer: When it is beyond someones proven ability to handle it under real world road conditions. If the only thing keeping someone on the road is all of the "nanny" handling computers, then it is too much. The lack of proper driver training today results in people who shouldn't even be allowed to drive Prius's on public roads. It's not speed that kills, it's the idiots who can't handle it and become a danger to others once there is a curve in the road.

If people have had advanced driving, handling or racing training, then that is another matter, although the cops may have a different opinion...

Rant over; flame on.

Age old answer- Never

The main issue is cost.
+1

If you cant afford to pay to play then you need to stop playing. I know so many people who can barely afford to buy the car of their dreams. then when they get it its sits around because they cant afford to maintain it.

Not my SL. I have a widebody with the Speedriven BOV's mounted to the Speedriven intercoolers.
