M156 motor gave out today.

M156 motor gave out today.
Never really had mechanical issues with the car, driving the car casually to get lunch this afternoon as soon as i accelerate through the round about my engine cuts power out, car starts vibrating whole chasis and engine.
I notice the check engine light starts to flash and the car is running horrible rev's have dropped.
I pull into a carpark give it a few minutes before turning the car on again, Starts doing the same knocking sounds from the engine when i change from P to D.
Hard to say what might the issue be but 50/50 on valve buckets giving out + camshaft 50/50 on missfire.
Quite guttered about the whole scenario, 40 000km on the engine.
I think it might be time to let the car go if its a very costly repair.
I have no warranty on the engine.
My next car will most likely be a c63 amg 4.0L bi-turbo in the next 2 years or amg gt if i can afford to fork out 325 000 australian dollars if this car is to costly to repair.

Ahhh man
Well...as long as it's not the bottom end, then you can probably DIY repair the top end at home on the driveway. Are you going to repair it yourself? That's what I would do tbh. Or I'd at least pull the valve covers and inspect for signs on damage. Hopefully it'll be a fairly 'simple' repair of the tappets and the cams (do an oil change too). There are used cams available on the interweb and a new suite of upgraded tappets shouldn't cost much more than a couple hundred.

If the valve buckets wear out the ticking noise will gradually get louder. Most people will be catch the sound and shut the engine down before failure.
In your case if the engine is knocking and missing you will require a rebuild or a replacement engine.

Sorry to hear what had happened. It's just worrisome the engine would conk out like that. That's around 24800 miles but it seems that problems can surface regardless of mileage. Hope all turns out well.

So.... this is what happened... My Fuel gauge is acting up apparently.. it showed i had half a tank left apparently it was just about to run out.... when it was about to the engine cut cylinders off... which made that weird sounds.... from what the dealership says...
they did compression testing and showed up fine, test drove it and valve buckets are fine..
They didnt tell me why the engine light came on, I'm not 100% sure if they did proper testing on the vehicle or not but were getting more done this week.
Does this usually happen to an m156 engine when it is completely running out of fuel?
Or do you guys think they didn't do proper testing?

I'm guessing you misunderstood the sound to be something that it wasn't.....which let's be honest, I'll bet you're happier to be wrong about thinking the motor gave way, than to actually have a motor that gave way

I'm really happy because i truely love the m156 and the sound/naturally aspirated feel.
Now i can get UPD + start messing with it a bit more .

To this day, I still struggle to see any keyless go W212 AMG's in the UK. I'm sure they must exist....but in the last 20 months or so that I've been interested in the marque....not a single one I've seen for sale. Might be a different story on the facelift turbo models, but I don't look at those ones in the classifieds.

The base package seems to vary between countries. In Australia, probably because luxury cars are already insanely expensive (taxes and small market), they are often sold essentially fully optioned. My CLS63S for example had no options on it but seems to be a nearly fully optioned car if it was in the USA.

An serious engine failure, ie the bottom end is generally what most people would assume when they see the thread title. That's my assumption of it.

Yeah... But either way top end can also be costly repairs if the buckets/cams fk up... around 15-20k repairs in australia...

Update... misfiring.... replacing sparkplugs to see if that will solve the problem.
The car is running to rich maybe?
Not 100% sure.

Do an injector cleaning ng. When you run them dry it causes them to have issue spraying properly. The cleaning should reverse the problem. Also, fix the gas gauge!

"Motor gave out" means your motor blew up (top-end, bottom-end, whatever).
When in actuality what really happened was: You ran out of gas. The title should say "I ran out of gas the other day....". I know that at the time all this happened it felt like the motor gave out, and maybe you jumped-the-gun a bit by posting this thread before you really knew what was going on. I'm not trying to bash you...I'm just saying it would be nice if the title of the thread were changed because as it stands, the title makes it seem like a worst-case scenario happened, when what really happened was user error (or a fuel gauge problem...).

drove 10miles to test it was fine.
When they turned the car on to move it out of the workshop it missfired again 2 days later.
Now they are changing spark plugs etc...
I'll let them know to clean the injectors.
I asked for a new fuel filter as well.
Hope its just something simple...
I'm really not up for massive repair bill.
