E63 drive ability year round Midwest

I made the mistake of driving a 2014 e 63s the other day. I thought that I would hate it as most performance sedans are simply uncomfortable in daily situations. I was beyond impressed with the vehicle. I see one in my future. Anyway, is anyone driving a 2014 or newer year round in the Midwest, taking on all weather changes?

If so are you swapping tires for winter?

Thanks

i drive it in all seasons except winter and it's a great dd; I just now put all seasons on it because the cold weather causes bad wheel hop and isn't safe for summer tire driving. I have a 2014 e63S that I have had since new, now with 15k miles

im in Chicago

FF. W212 E63 M156 non-pano 18" P2 ParkT NightV (gone but will be missed).
I have a RWD one and I drove it year round when I was near north central Indiana. However, definitely don't do so via summer tires on snow and ice unless you are looking for some dangerous white-knuckled fish-tailing adventures. You will definitely be fine if you have winter tires on. As with all my vehicles, I always carry a heavy duty towing strap with hooks in my trunk and had to use it once with the summer tires.

Any 4matic with all seasons will conquer winter. It would be a shame to not drive it in the winter imo.

the 33/66 split isn't as ideal as the non Amg 4 matics and can induce more oversteer if not careful

reminds me of my dad's 1999 e320 which brought back 4 matic to Benz that year and was 33/66 split

I'm in Colorado and just put a set on Nokian WRG3 tires on a spare set of wheels. These tires were highly recommended and are "all weather" as opposed to "all season". I figure Nov-March with the Nokian and April-October with the summer tires/wheels.

I'll let you know how the Nokians work out. I'll had Bizzaks on my other cars/wheels but they wear too fast on a high HP car.

I have a 2016 E63S wagon and would suggest that if you are going to be driving in snow/ice conditions you will need to make the switch from summer to winter tires. The summer tires have no grip in freezing conditions on snow/ice covered roads. I live in Ontario and while we may not get the quantity of snow you see in the mid-west, winter tires are the only way to operate this vehicle safely in those conditions. I installed Michelin Alpin PA4's (19") on dedicated rims. I have also installed winter tires on our SLK since summer tires are useless on rear wheel drive vehicles on snow and ice. Both vehicles perform perfectly in winter conditions.

I drive my 2014 E63 around Chicago/Wisconsin year-round. Winter tires a must, they go on Mid-November and come off first week in April. 4 Matic plus Winter tires makes this AMG better then the wife's ML in the snow/Ice except when there is 6+ inches of snow on the road which is rare for extended periods. Just have to take it easy.

Chicago winters can get rough. I am still debating if I want to drive the e63 or store it for the winter and drive other cars. This is my first winter with the E

Thank you for the informative replies.
The recommendations for a second set of tires is duly noted. I also appreciate the comments on the tires used successfully.
I will be looking much more enthusiastically now!

I hate to hijack the thread but we just got our wagon a few weeks ago, and here in NJ the winter rods are horrid. I was going to go with a set of Nokian WRG3 tires. Is there a consensus on what is the most indestructible dedicated wheel for winter? Also does anyone happen to know if a second set of wheels is covered by the wheel and tire insurance?

Car is GREAT in snow with all-seasons, not even snow tires. Better than my Audi with all-seasons.

I had a '14 E63S with full Renntech mods except turbo upgrade.
Drove it for a little bit over 2 years and put over 20k miles in ALL weather conditions, car was excellent on any surface, handled great even the worst snowstorm.
Winter tires are a must in this climate, all seasons are useless anyway, I grew up in Poland/Germany so swapping tires for Winter is in my blood and I do it religiously and that includes SUVs (like my wife's G63).

I live in Chicago and DD my 2014 E63 year round. Winter tires are the key, the car is solid in snow, and we get a lot of snow. I will say my S4 was better in snow though.

4matic is not as good as Quattro.

I went up a pretty steep road called "Icy Hill Road" multiple times last winter near a ski resort. There was a large sign nearby that stated not to attempt the street in winter unless you have AWD and/or winter tires and/or tire chains. One person there approached me and asked how I managed that. I had RWD with studless Michelin XI-3 245/40-18 on all four corners. With 4-matic, I'm sure I'll fly up that hill.

I drive my 2015 year round. The car is fantastic! If you regularly see snow, I would strongly recommend going with a full set of proper winter tires. All season tires turn hard at anything below 7C. Cheap insurance in my opinion. Tires are not a place to cut corners.

Realize that your 2014 E63 comes from the factory with Summer-only tires (not all seasons!), so you MUST switch them for all-seasons or winters when it's cold. Driving summer tires in freezing weather is truly dangerous, suicidal.

That said, on winter tires the 2014 E63 is a blast in snow! Especially in Sport stability control.

Agreed. Fun car in the snow! Certainly overpowered, but handles like it should
