19" or 20" with AIR BODY CONTROL?

Hi,

Which of these two configurations would be the best to make the car look taller, more like a SUV, less like a "normal" car?

Option 1: 19" amg wheels
Option 2: 20" amg wheels with AIR BODY CONTROL

I've already done the math and regardless of what size wheels you get the outer diameter is always the same: 29" (+/-0.2"). Though if getting that extra 0.2" really matters to you then opt for the 19" wheels because they're slightly larger than all the other options.

(Not sure why ABC with 19" wheels isn't an option for you but that combination will get you the highest ground clearance.)

On a related note: I'm not sure that ABC stays raised all the time. I thought I'd read that if you go over some speed (50 MPH?) the car automatically lowers itself. You might want to ask around to be sure.

The 20" give the illusion of being taller due to the wheel design and smaller sidewall, although the height is the same. Air body control gives you the ability to raise the vehicle at lower speeds.

I believe if you option the Off-Road package in conjuction with Air Body Control then the car will ride 20mm higher than with the conventional spring suspension.

Is the ABC a must with the 20"? The dealership said it was a must, but I don't believe that...

I suspect he is inferring that if you want a certain quality of ride more in keeping with the Mercedes brand then to compensate for the lower aspect ratio tyres fitted to 20" wheels, then ABC should be optioned as the conventional suspension just won't cut it. The Off-Road package is bundled with 18-inch wheels because the more balloon-like nature of the tyres works better in an off-road environment. With ABC optioned with this package, you get an extra "Rocking Assist" mode as well as the extra 20mm increase in ride height.

The combination of ABC and 18-inchers probably delivers the most comfortable ride possible but if you are a 100% asphalt driver who is perhaps upgrading from a pickup truck, the 20-inchers and conventional suspension will still offer you a sublime ride quality. It is all relative.
