It is not filter. It is emergency mesh to catch a bolt or shop rag you MIGHT accidentally drop in.
doubt you can buy it separately , but check the net dealers.
I would not worry about it too much, just caulk damaged edge.

doesn't seem to be sold separately
dealership wants 500 bucks for the whole assembly
if anyone has a bad MAF sensor and willing to sell me the assembly let me know please
my ocd will not let me put it back lol
and plus its broken ring around it
I did notice some models don't have it

You'll be just fine without it.
Just don't drop any bolts. ...
and make sure your ail filters are up to date.

In the world of VW Tdi's, that's referred to as a snow screen and is generally removed upon purchase. Better air flow is the direct result. It's up to you to make sure your air filters are good and that you don't drop anything into the air duct that would grenade a valve.

I already ordered a used sensor on ebay for 24 dollars shipped
I assumed the screen is for more even air flow distribution to get more accurate maf reading
I would probably be gaining .03HP at the crank by removing the screen
but thanks for info
