Hydroplaned :-(

Well, my baby is officially broken and bruised. During heavy rain, I attended to switch lanes and I lost control of my car when it hydroplaned. I managed to avoid a few other cars, however I smashed the cement wall pretty good.

As far as I can tell from the pictures, both the front and rear drivers side tie rods are damaged. There also appears to be some buckling above and to the Right of the rear door. The drivers side airbag deployed which left me with a concussion, however I was able to walk away. I'm sad she is broken but very thankful she did her job in protecting me.

Car is with insurance adjuster now. What are the chances this is repairable?

Phil

Was going to ask the same question. Not to blame, but just curious.

My front tires are completely worn (have the winter tires on now so not an issue) and I noticed the front grip dropped dramatically in the rain and I was particular careful driving when the roads had standing water).

Glad you are ok. Looks like it could easily be repaired, but not sure if they will find it worth the $$ to repair. Airbag deployment can add to the repair costs a lot.

I would say I had about 25% tread left. I was traveling at about 65 mph, spun 180 degrees..managed to slow down a bit but probably hit the wall around 55-50 mph.

However in this case, I don't think any amount of tread could have prevented it. The freeway is in bad shape and it was raining pretty heavy. In fact I switched lanes because I was going to exit the freeway and let the down pour finish.

Everything looks easily fixable except for that wrinkle above and behind the door. Are you sure it is a wrinkle, hopefully it's just a shadow in the photo.

That'll buff right out. Jk. Glad you are OK! It's definitely repairable, cost is the issue. Depends on how it hit and angle, and whether the subframe was bent. Otherwise, I'd think it wouldn't be that bad.

In 2006 a kid in mommies Arura ran 2 red lights and hit my 2003 W320 just forward of the left front tire. Not to bore you with the details the insurance company insisted it could be fixed. The parts bill was $28000 CDN because I insisted OEM all the way right down to new labels under the hood. They had drivers side seat air bag and over head to replace which meant the rear window came out to put in a new headliner which meant a new harness. You get the picture. The car was off the road for 8 weeks.
That said, the shop that did the work was a MB approved shop but it did not have the most up to date measuring and straightening equipment and while they did their best it as just odd even after MB did a lot of work on their alignment equipment, excentric bolts etc.
I see your car somewhat different but you need the best alignment gear to set this thing back up right, make sure the thrust angle etc are all cool. Do you thing you hit hard enough to bend the front frame rails? That was the source of my issues. The car had a very slight tendency to wander left over distances. I ran 1 psi more air in the front left tire for 3 yr before I sold it. It helped but was not perfect.

I hit the cement wall pretty darn hard....most of the impact was done to the rear. Looking at the car from behind, it looks like the entire rear end shifted to the right.

It's at the collision shop now so I'll make sure they put it on a frame rack and measure things with the lasers. I don't see this as a cheap fix, so I'm guessing they may total it out.

That sounds nasty for sure. I would be worried too.
Thrust angle will be tricky to get right if it is that far displaced as I don't think you are talking about just bent trailing arms etc. I would be looking at the mounting points as well for damage.
It will be interesting to see what shakes out. These cars are tough. For sure a lot tougher than their more modern siblings regardless of model.
Keep us posted.

maybe people should learn how to drive a 450-500hp car??? this has nothing to do with the car ..the c63 has enough electronics built in to save you if you have half a brain

id hate to see you guys behind a old muscle car that barely has drum brakes yet alone a ESP system to hold the rear end together

idk why dudes buy a AMG and expect it to drive fine on completely wrecked tires ..i see this over and over and over again on the forums

"Oh my tires are completely ****ed but i have some on order!!!!!" ...why wouldn't you replace once they have less then 30% left ..why wait until it has 10

anyways OP next time buy new tires before you crash ..no trying to be a dink but man what if you were going through a school zone and your car ate *** and you smoked some kids? seriously, say it can't happen but ive seen it happen tons

Wow, seriously? I know how to drive the car and HP was irrelevant in this situation. I wasn't speeding, just happened to run over a section of freeway with bad puddling.

Perhaps you should learn something called class?

these cars can handle inches of water no problems, your tires look roasted ..thats why you crashed

im not trying to be a dink but every week theres a new post "Wrecked my car!!!" ...like come on guys, cars dont crash themselves the same way a gun aint gonna pull the trigger and go on a rampage

i know this is hard to accept but again, the car didn't just randomly crash itself

the car is fixable, just replace the tires more often when you get it back and you'll be all good

Hey, Pip, I assume you didn't have any issues with the airbag? Just wondering bc of the Takada recall.

The steering wheel airbag didn't deploy, just the side airbag on the driver's side.

From the pictures it seems like it could be fixed but will take a while and a bit of $. Def would check to make sure nothing like the frame, control arms, alignment, etc, doesn't has extensive damage to it. Glad you are ok though Pip.

Near $20k in damage there... you may just get a check.

...and I'm sitting on new winters to install... was going to try and get a few more weeks out of my old ones, but this reminds me not to...

That crease in the C-Pilar shows that there is some structural damage, personally I would rather have it totaled. Assuming it is worth 25-35k depending on milage in excellent condition, if we are looking at 20k damage, they are better to total the car and part it out as the motor and trans alone will make up the difference, they can probably get 10-15k out of the car unfixed.

Hopefully its a best case scenario.

If not you could part some stuff out to at least get some money back.

^ This. The frame looks bent... and no matter how much you pull it on a frame straightener, that car will never track straight again. I would pass. OP - glad you're OK.

how fast were you going? tire condition?

I lost control of my e36 97 m3 back in the year 2000 right in the first 10 minutes of rain which is when roads are the most dangerous because it has not rained enough to wash the oil off the expressway. Mind you i was not speeding and i was not acting like an idiot, I was actually going 40 mph because of traffic. The rear end broke loose out of nowhere because my tires were shot. I had michelin pilot sports on there and i was in college too broke to afford new tires at the time. Man was that a hard lesson learned because i ended up spinning out and crashing into the wall backwards causing 15k damageI to the vehicle. I hit the wall so hard that i snapped the steering wheel in half from hanging on to it during impact. Surprisingly i was able to drive the car home lol.

ever since i do not heistate to buy tires and i pay extra care when it is raining or snowing. Especially in my mustang that has no traction as is when it is dry and sticky out lol. Plus that car has no type of safety features and who knows if the air bag still works. not that i drive my cl or mustang in the rain or snow anyways but have been caught in the rain before
