odometer stopped working, any ideas?

Hey guys, my uncle had recently bought an 500SL (1992) and the odometer isn't working anymore. Neither does the tripmeter. Any ideas? The rest of the gauges on the cluster work fine (ie: speedo, tach etc). Is this a relatively easy DIY job or best to consult professionals?

Thanks,

Jack

Try reseting the trip meter. Leave the car on and in drive and release the brake. Then hit the trip meter. see if it jars it loose. This only works if you dont have the digital type. JJ

i have the same "problem" except I don't see it as a problem. Claim that you drive it an average of 5k miles a year and enjoy a reduced premium on your insurance.

I never cared to much to try and fix it. Maybe in 2 years when smog is due, cause it'll look funny if it's smogged at the same exact mileage, haha.

Well, I found a place to send the gauge cluster to have it repaired for my uncle. The gears driving the odo & trip meter were all sheared off. I guess my aunt might've pressed the re-set button while moving

(old post but useful for future reference) Not very helpful info people... You'll have to remove the cluster and take it apart. It is mechanical in design. The mechanism has jammed on the cog wheels (or wheel broke).
Spraying a small amount of lubricant may free it. Otherwise for a small amount of money you can replace the plastic wheels.

Intermittent odometer and trip failure

I have 1992 SL500. I've had gears repaired but my odometer and trip meter will work for a while, then stop working, then start working again. Any suggestions.

Technically it's a 500SL not "SL500"
