R129 gets a new stereo!

So I have just started a big stereo install in my 91' 300sl, R129's have a realllllly complicated interior arrangement compared to W107's (where I get most of my Mercedes experience, as well i should, i own a 380sl, two 450slc's, a 450sl, and a privately imported 280sl, just bought my R129). Thought this section might have some interest in seeing my project so far, Ill try to post more pics as the project comes along.

TheV12PWR, I have my OEM unit if you're interested. Came out of 92' sl-300. Whats it worth to ya?

By the way a radio install in the car is a rather extensive operation. It took me about 12 hours. Not complaining though the finished product looks great Crutchfeild helped out a bit. But running all new wires was a pain I had not initially expected. I had also changed the factory speakers as well, installed cross-overs, and satellite radio.

That is the same exact stereo I want to put into mine! Keep me posted of your progress as I'm afraid to tackle mine or to let a stereo shop mess with my Baby! Mine has the factory am/fm cassette player in it! UGH!
my email is gerberld@yahoo.com
Thanks a bunch,

Something I had to do when converting from the old the OEM head unit was to run all new wires for the speakers and new antenna cable to the trunk. It took me about 8 full hours of labor. I bought my stereo and new speakers/cross-overs from Crutchfeild and they were helpful however there was no adapter kit to wire into the MB factory harness. Which lead to a more extensive install than I had anticipated. All and all I am happy with the finished product. It was worth all the work and cursing.

any more info here? I'm planning on setting my mom up with a nice stereo replacement for her busted r129 stereo...replacing the amp and all the speakers is so $$ that I think an aftermarket setup will be better for the $.

I'm pretty happy with the stock Bose system, but that looks like some pretty sweet hardware!

my head unit wouldn't power up and i wasn't sure if the changer worked when i got the vehicle back in april.

becker will/would change out the head unit for $150 and send you the keys to remove the radio for the swap.

i got a clarion 385usb with aux input for ipod(no adapter required) from crutchfield.
it included an adapter that plugged into the mb harness that needed to be spliced into the included clarion harness.

butt splicing the color coded wires, removing the old unit, sliding in the new unit was 45 min and it sounds great.

with usb and ipod, i'll never use another cd.

New wires?

I know you did this awhile back. Why did you run new wires? I have a 92 300sl as well, and no reason to run new wires that I know of. Did you have the CD changer in your car? 5 minutes with Crutchfeild and I had the strong sense they had no clue what they were talking about. I'm glad they were able to help you. They did sell me a wire harness for my car (which would of course be a bit useless if I had to run all new wires).

Having used Clarion via Cruthchfield the wiring harness worked directly with the Bose system and speakers so I used no wiring except for XM, backup camera and SAT antennas. ( all provided with the units purchased from Crutchfield )
