Starting the engine in 'P' or 'N'

On the odd occasion i've not been able to start the engine when he gear's in P position, but there's no such problem when selecting N.

Can anyone tell me why this may be?
The car is parked on a sloping drive, not that it should matter.

There's a microswitch on the transmission selector which is activated in N and P to enable the starting circuit. It sounds like there's something mechanical working loose.
