Dashboard storage-cannot open

Feel like a fool to ask, bit I can't open this compartment on this R129 I just purchased. I borrowed one to try out before I bought this one and I had the same problem with it. Is this a known problem?

I had the same problem on my 98 - was able to stick a small screwdriver in along the left side near the top and release the latch. It is round plastic and had gotten turned a little sideways on the shaft. Straightened it back out, no problems in 3 or 4 months. I use a putty knife to pry out slightly on the top to see the lock mechanism and how to get to the latch.

Is it possible that the compartment is locked? What happens when you depress the open button?

Okay,
fussing around with a feeler gauge on the Right hand side did it. I took the whole thing out and it just simply looks like the button was missing the slider on the compartment and it didn't appear to be quite installed correctly. This car did have the factory phone at one point so perhaps it was never just put back in right. I'll try playing with it tonight, but I'll make sure to tie a string to it just incase it gets stuck again!

From my experience, DO NOT overtighten the two screws that hold the box in place. Loose is better

You know, I can't even get the screws to engage, it is like they are too short, but loose it works! I'll try longer screws n c what happens
