Oil Leak--1997 320 SL
I have a 1997 SL 320 with 50,000 original miles. We have had the car for years and plan to keep it. We have an oil leak we are told is coming from the rear of the HEAD gasket. It appears to leak down to the exhaust pipe creating a strong oil smell after running. I am told that in 1997 Mercedes used the “old type” HEAD gasket material. The estimated repair cost--$2,000. Does this sound reasonable? The vehicle is garaged for the winter so please do not hesitate to respond even if you think this Post is old. Thank you.

Take your time . It will not correct itself, but on the other hand many of us Benz owners have some oil leaks!
If memory serves older 6 cylinder engines had Head gasket problems, not sure if that applies to 320.
Minor engine oil leaks are commonplace with several benz that I have owned ( R107, 129 even newest toy the SLS R199 and of course all the 50-70's 4 and six cylinders engines )
Because all power plants are working well I just invest in "Kitty Litter" so the parking surface is not slick!
Good luck with the oil issue

I paid $1800 when I had the head gasket replaced on my 92 300CE (same motor), about 3 years ago. While the head and front end of the motor are off, look closely at the timing chain, tensioner, guides, water pump, hoses, belt, etc. etc. etc.
Good Luck...
