The first operation a car's computer does when you turn the key is determine the position of the crankshaft. Ignition cannot take place without an understanding of where the valvetrain and pistons are at in their cycle - information the crankshaft provides.

When an engine struggles or fails to start, or when it feels down on power or responsiveness, the cause is oftentimes a failing crankshaft position sensor (CPS).

ECS offers several options to solve this highly disruptive but simple problem.

A Critical little Sensor

How much is it for the labor to install a CPS?

I just had the CPS replaced and the labor was $95. The car now idles perfectly.

Thanks for the feedback.

For those 129 owners, especially MY 99-02, that have not experienced this problem beware that it's not easily diagnosed because it doesn't throw a DTC. It usually happens it the worst of conditions, Let's say your in traffic and it's hot out and your 75K mile car just dies in trafic and won't start. So you wait for the car to cool down and it starts but happens again at a later time. One of the best diagnostic's is to pour about a gallon of cool water over the CPS at the back of the engine/bell housing. That will usually cool the CPS and allow you to start the car. That's why I carry this $45.00 part in the trunk of my car.
