SL/R129: SL Gap cap

1999 SL 500, 2009 E 300Class, 2006 ML350
SL Gap cap
So bought a new gas cap with the attaching strap but damed if i can get the plug out to attach the cap. Dealer doesn't sell replacement plugs so must be able to remove but the way I'm going I'm going to destroy it. Is there a special tool I should be using?
