Still trying to get voltage from check engine

Thank you cliffyk. Great info. in finding the wiring diagram. However, using my meter, I get nothing and I have the key on. I traced the wires to the fuse box and fuse 1 & 5 were fine. But I still get no reading. I changed to copper fuses to make sure. When I purchased this 500sl I knew there were lots of areas with problems. In fact there was duct tape over the bulb hole and the words check engine was missing. The car is shaping up after working on it for 4 months, part time, and still more to do. But I can't get it smogged here in Calif. unless the check engine lights works properly. Since I've checked those two areas and get no voltage, where do I go from here, where do I check next?? It seems the previous owner wanted to eliminate the check engine to eliminate suspicion. My fault, should have been more observant. Appreciate any help anyone can feed me. Thanks
