My hood release cable on my 1998 SL500 when pulled does not spring back. It seems to catch on the carpeting on the side wall. Is it missing a piece or standoff or something else? The handle pulls out to open the latches and remains in that position unless pushed back. I am used to having the release snapback by itself. What component powers the snap back? Thanks to all for addressing this problem.

Try greasing the hood latch itself. I've had this problem on other cars and this seems to help.
