the early R 129 diagnostic port is on the right side of the fire wall ( US vehicle set up )
A blink light system is how you gain insight. Each contact point has one lead with the tester, the second lead touches the ground point in the 38 pin junction point.
the early models don't have the OBS II standard connection. early years also have the "mercedes" OBS I and some years have both analogy and digital aspects of the "on board diagnostic" port.
Your solution of disconnecting the crank sensor is providing a re-set of the system.
I personally turn the reading of the blinks to an "old school" benz mechanic and the get to repair or replacement of the offended system.
From other members of the forum who own the Japan version model may have a real insight for you. Also BenzWorld may have the "blink" code list if you are DIY.
Good luck
