Insurance company totaled my SL500, but will let me pull parts. Advice?
As mentioned in another thread, I crashed my SL500 a week ago today. The damage to the other car (I hit from behind) is minimal, and there were no major injuries (the other driver in the SUV was stunned and a little dramatic, in my opinion, but the police followed up and said she is fine).
My car, on the other hand, is dead.
The insurance company decided to call it a loss and are giving us $11,000 for it, which is a good bit more than I paid for it ($3000 from father-in-law; he gave it to us, but we traded 3 grand worth of services from the business my wife owns).
Anyway, the insurance company and salvage yard said we could pull parts from it if we want, and I have a good set of tools, sooooo.
Is there any advice you can give me about pulling parts for resale that might help me earn a few extra bucks? It would have to be over a two to three hour time span, so I can't keep the engine, etc., obviously.
I am going to take the battery (I bought it two weeks ago for $125), the tool kit that people seem to need (it has the original tool kit), and maybe even the wheels (even though the finish is poor and they need to be refinished--not sure if that's worth the trouble).
Anyway, the money from the insurance company will go toward whatever my wife wants. She wants a crossover SUV. I guess my Mercedes days, short as they were, are over.
Any advice?
Thanks

Many seem to want tow hook covers and the rollbar-mounted windscreen. Are the headlights aftermarket? If they are euro spec or exotic you may be able to sell them. Is the steering wheel wood? That can sell easily. If you have a trunk-mounted CD changer, that might also sell. Radio and amps as well. All of these items are easy and quick to remove. I'm sure there are many others that I can't think of at the moment.

Almost all interior plastic bits, HVAC side and center vents, HVAC control, the trim at the visor pivots, airbags are worth big bucks, center console if it is in good shape, tail lights, front corner lights (not smashed of course), rear view and side mirrors...
If I knew my insurance would pay $11k I'd crash mine later today...

Sorry for your loss.
The jack hole covers are easy to pull (and I need 2). Soft top controller under rear passenger deck (2 nuts, very quick). Soft top pump under spare (couple of nuts, cut the lines). Bit more involved. Hack out the vacuum pump. I think the seat memory module is under the drivers seat (among others). 2 bolts pop the seat bottom off. Maybe the climate control module. Any modules in the coffin. Easy stuff to pull in a couple hours, expensive stuff to source.
Cheers, phendriks
