$700 R129

So I have been trying to buy this 98 SL500,seller in ad says $700, its pretty beat, 174k,peeling paint, wont pass emissions etc, thinking of using it as a parts car, I think the wheels are Silver Arrow replicas? problem is seller won't call me back! I have left 5 messages and the car being 1/4 mile away from me ,I even left a note on car,not sure what to do to get it? flakey sellers!

LowesGuy I said it over at the other website, and I followed you here to say it again ha ha.

Buy that 1998 R129 right away, or I will be on the next plane from Africa to LAX, to take that south-bound I-15 from the 91 freeway, to Temecula so that I can score that $700 deal on the diamond in the rough 500SL you have been kind enough to post pictures of here.

Seriously speaking I do think you cannot go wrong at that low price, even if you need to have the engine rebuilt after the purchase.

This is the cheapest car to buy ,but hardest to purchase! owner does not return calls, he left his cousins phone number and that guy sleeps all day, window are 3/4 way up and rainstorm coming tomorrow, great, had to deal with this seller! never there,he does have a pink slip, interior is nasty but all there, dashboard intact.

Definitely that low price makes it well worth the hassle of tracking down the owner. Under the caked dust and faded paint, the bodywork looks to be free of blemishes, so a new paint job will transform that vehicle into a thing of beauty that its previous owner would be hard pressed to recognize as his old once-neglected car.

Your familiarity with all the usual R129 issues that emerge over decades will ensure that the mechanical aspects of the refurbishment proceed in straight forward fashion.

All the best with the quest, sir, and may the mystery current owner emerge to let her go, into the hands of a very competent and knowledgeable new owner.

Thanks ,you see what I see, If I get it will first try and get it running and test all systems, if its easy fix then restore will be in the future, if not will part it and help keep other R129's alive.

For sure $700 would be a steal of a price, even for a non-operational parts donor R129. Also, even if the asking price is a mere $700, the seller may be amenable to letting the car go for between $400 and $500. There is never any harm done, and certainly nothing to lose by engaging in a little old-fashioned haggling over the price before the deal is closed.

Here's hoping you find that AWOL owner, before another buyer makes an appearance.
