Just bought a 500 and doing a project on it.

Already I can tell it's going to need a lot of work. So this is the before pics and once I'm done with everything I'll do a after. But so far the convertible top is giving me a pain in the neck since one piston was leaking, so after seeing that I replaced it with a new one.after trying it out it blew another piston, got me a little aggravated but I said what ever and replaced that one. So tried it one more time and it blew another one. So what I did I just removed all the other old pistons and sent them to California to get them rebuilt, expensive but better then putting 4K in all 13 (I think) Pistons. Other then that I got to fix the ac and then I can start on repainting the bumpers, getting new leather on seats and pretty much the exterior and interior. I'm not sure if you guys are interested in seeing the results but what ever. (It has 63,000 miles) and the car looks a lot worse in person so don't think it's a easy job

good luck, have fun and extra money, it will all be good.
having owned two and restored even thru the harness issue, all the age issues need to be addressed. TopHydraulics has rebuilt all and function is great. expense about $600? The 600 suspension ADS has had new nitrogen spheres, twice...age!
electronics systems HVAC, instrument panel, top controller and radio, bose amp. are age related, too

I actually sent them to top hydraulics. Costs $130 for each piston but what ever. Just put in another $300 on a new top. All the fabric is ripping of. Just wet sanded the entire car and buffed the **** out of it and now it looks like it was brand new paint. I'll hook you guys up with some after pics. Here are some extra before pics.

That is a fine steed indeed. With a little pampering this beast will put a chit-eating grin on your face, whenever you apply throttle power, out on the swooping curves of the open highway where this automobile is most at home.

Sure, things like the timing chain upper rails will need to be replaced right away, followed by sundry other routine fixes, but, the end result of all that attention to the drive-train and suspension, will be a top-of-the line vehicle that commanded a sticker price north of $100 grand US, now acquired and revitalized for only a small fraction of its cost back when, not too long ago, the R129 was the flagship of its genre.

I'll be checking in to read about your R129 adventures. Also, after conducting an informal opinion poll of one person, I declare that this car was a prudent acquisition carried out in good faith.

This official vote of support can be cited to your better half, in the likely event that she was opposed to buying an R129 in the first place ha ha.

he bought an sl for $500 complains about few pistons and few hundred $ spend.... priceless

I'm in the process of rebuilding a 97, pretty much exactly the same as yours, spend 2 grand already, looks like the day I bought it, not a sign that anyone even messed with it, $10,000 to go...and that's my conservative estimate, before it's up to my standards

good luck

Who in the hell said I bought it for $500? Get your facts straight before speaking bud. I'm not fortunate enough to not worry about spending money as a college student. And actually i replaced all 13 Pistons, not a few. I've spent at least $3k on the project already. So least to say, I'm god damn glad that I can afford to do this as a student who got loans over the top of there heads. Priceless how ignorant people like you could just blurt out things without thinking about what you're going to say.

Jeepers fellas. What ever happened to the good old-fashioned notion of agreeing to disagree ?

Backing up to the basics, Alba2484 snagged a nice car, and the rest of us forum visitors, including the Always Mighty Makim, support this acquisition, meaning of course that Planet Earth will continue to rotate about its timeless axis, uninterrupted, which is a reassuring thought.

Just installed the rebuilt Pistons from top hydraulics and so far so good, they are all working fine with out the fabric top on. Today I plan to install it and see. I painted the the bumpers and the place where the top has the lock in the back. Replaced the ac resistor and blower. New LED taillights and new headlights. So I'm pretty happy with the results coming out

Even if your claim is true, and Alba2484 doesn't yet own an R129, it is at least clear that he is interested enough in these cars to buy one when he is good and ready, so in my view there is no harm discussing the repair of the vehicle whose photographs he has posted here.

As an example, I too did not own an R129 when I first enrolled in this forum. I had spotted one for sale at the time, but that deal fell through, so it was a couple of months down the road, before I finally found and bought my 1991 Mercedes 500SL currently nearing its launch date after much refurbishment.

So, BeejAMG, give Alba the benefit of the doubt, if you will, and recognize that he is legitimately interested in the R129 line, just as are you and I, meaning that there is no harm done by him sharing ideas here with other users of this amazing vehicle.

Toke it easy, brother, and the world will turn.

Being interested and trying to fool members are 2 different things mate. You can keep replying to him for all i care, its not me hes fooling. You can keep feeding his fantasies or you can stop being so naive. You take it easy...........bro.

Its cool BeejAMG. I understand not wishing to discuss these complex but rewarding cars with forum writers who possibly might not yet have located a R129 that is both in reasonable condition, and affordable to buy.

My perception is that since this is a public forum with several highly knowledgeable contributors on hand to generously enlighten beginners like myself, no harm is done in discussing the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic design features of the R129, with like-minded car enthusiasts who appreciate the form and function of this fine vehicle that when new commanded sticker prices in that rarefied $100K bracket, yet can now be acquired for a mere pittance, by those who seek out diamonds in the rough, then fix them up with the free yet highly valuable help of forums like this one.

whilst youre on point with what youre saying, this thread started by a POSER is absolutely what were trying to avoid. Search the meaning of "troll" and you might find yourself scratching your head. The OP is taking you all for a ride saying this and that whilst all of you are anxiously waiting for updates, hes laughing at you.

My initial post on this thread is to warn everybody else that replies on OPs post, not just you, like i said, if you want to keep feeding trolls fantasies by replying to his post, then youre not helping at all. Youre simply killing this forum that you obviously love.

BeejAMG I only now noticed you hail from Down Under, where there is zero tolerance for posers. If I ever wind up as a door-to-door encyclopedia salesman, I imagine Australia would not be a good location to make such a living ha ha.

With wisdom this in mind, I just might be forced to post some pictures of my R129 here in the next couple of days, so as to hastily distance myself from the activities of any suspected posers that may be at large in this forum.

Ha ha just kidding. In all seriousness though, I need to be on my best behavior at all times, given your very high post count in this forum, because chances are that with your long years of owning various Mercs, there could be much cost-cutting R129 repair advice that might be punitively withheld, if I don't climb down off this soap-box and stop playing defense attorney for Alba2484, a relative newcomer much like myself.

Dont get me wrong mate. its not how much youve posted or how long youve been here. All is welcome here, we all share one passion, but if somebody tries to fool other members and ruin this forum by trolling, thats what others like me cant tolerate.

Please, and i say again, please, read the link that i initially posted (post by post and click on the other links as well) and try to see how OP got caught trolling. Cheers mate and glad to see youre very passionate about your car. Outta here.
