Differential Replacement

I have been told my differential needs to be replaced. It is making a grinding noise. Has anyone actually done this themselves. It looks like it is just a matter of removing the flex disk, un bolting the drive shafts at the differential housing , removing the support bolts and then dropping it out. I know this must not be the case as the shop says it takes 7 hr. to do the job.

No I am not working In the front yard 😅 . I have done about everything you can do to a car over the last 50 yrs ( I am 60) except a differential or transmission. . Started tinkering at a very early age with anything that used gas or diesel. I just sold a sl 600 and bought this sl500 but did not know it needed a new differential. The guy I bought it from had a straight pipe on it after the cats and I could not hear the grinding. So when I put the muffler back on , there it was. I am trying to find out if this is a repair that I can do. Any information from someone who has actually done this would be greatly appreciated.
