Uh, I don't get it!

So my '96 sl320's windows work fine with the top on but off, nope. If I have them down when I remove the top, they won't go up when it's off and likewise the inverse. Any ideas? Bob

First thought is that the final stage switches are not engaged or the signal is not getting there (to the control unit). When the top is off or stowed away, does the rollbar still work and are there any indications of problems else where (dash lights or the top switch flashing)?

Been a bit but I remember that the windows will not work as long as the top is in some form of "transitory state." IE: top is not full put away/removed or top is not full engaged/closed. That is the reason I think that the final stage switches are the culprit here. Try checking the status of the cylinders (making sure they are all the way they are supposed to be) and pressing them to their final state as appropriate and see if that allows the windows to move. Otherwise I would start looking at the wiring and the control unit to make sure the signal is getting to where it needs to go.
