Which Engine

A friend of mine bought a 1990 300 SL for too much money and missing the front engine cover which I suggested he make the seller replace but he didn't. He said his indy could not find a part for the car.
I did some research and came up with the M104 for this car (DOHC Inline 6 3L 24V) and did some eBay shopping and was assured PN A1041500066 would fit. It doesn't.
Does anybody out there have access to build cards and be able to tell me what the engine number is in his car and perhaps even the part number for the front engine cover? The VIN is WDBFA61E5LF005196.
I of course now have the above PN available for sale should someone be looking for one.
I would be most grateful for any assistance that can be provided.

You will find the part number at this site,

https://www.mbpartscenter.com

Your engine number is correct if it is a 24V is an M104

Actually you need more than the general designation than M104.
The engine actually is 104.981 and the front engine cover part is different than the one I originally purchased.
The correct PN for the 104.981 is 104-158-02-85

Correct, that number is the one you find in the number plates in the bumper in front of the radiator fan, second row of the plate

Yes you do, that's why EPC is used to correctly select parts for MB cars!!

The only problem is that without the VIN you would have folks looking all over the place. The cover is apart of the ignition system and is a suppressor housing cover and your part number is correct!!
