ENGINE misses and stops

My 1995 SL500 starts good and runs smooth until the temp reaches normal op temp..... 80 plus a little..... it then miss fires, sputters, and stops. When it cools down after several hours it starts easily, idles good, and when the temp reaches about the 80? degrees it miss fires, sputters, and stops. It will not restart until it is cooled down. What goes with this?

I think your engine has CPS?
Those are typical symptoms for CPS failure

I am not familiar with the CPS component. Would you please be more specific.

Crankshaft Position Sensor.
Used on digitally-controlled engine ( I am not familiar with yours but my 1998 SL500 has it)
Early CPS had high failure ratio.

Did you try to pull codes?
Doesn't look like owner of the same MY is coming "to the table"
I can help with general experience, so fill me in - is your engine having digital injection or what?
Next step would be hooking up fuel pressure gauge.

No I haven't resolved my problem however, a few days past I contacted my old Mb mechanic friend MARTY on JUST ANSWERS.com and we had a detailed discussion on the subject and he said the problem is MOISTURE IN THE DISTRIBUTORS. ALSO, probably needs new distributor caps, rotors, seal and a good cleaning. He said the big contributor to this problem is moisture and not driven frequently. Both fit my op scenario. My Benz would go for months without being driven or even cranked. This was because the car was not where I was and no one would crank it for me. I live in South Alabama... ROLL TIDE..... where humidity is high and temps fluctuate. I will not be applying MARTY's suggestion until I return from my month long Christmas jollies in North Carolina. I should return to Bama on the 15th and shortly thereafter I will attack this problem. Additionally, yesterday while I was snow bound at my cabin I explored the internet and found some outstanding info on CARE and FEEDING of MBs at this website...... MERCEDESSOURCE.COM. Very detailed info on there. Stay in touch. Chetter sends

Engine misses and stops

Ahoy V-AMG, i am back on my problem again after a long vacation and still have the same problem which is "cold engine, cranks real good and sounds good until engine temp reaches 80C, then the engine starts light miss firing, and gets worse until 1-2 minutes later the engine begins heavy miss firing and shortly thereafter ..... quits! When this happens the engine will crank but will not run until the next day when temp is ambient.. There is a very light ping as I try to restart the engine which reminds me of a sound when it is getting very lean fuel. Also, it sounds like it is lean to the point of mis-firing or a weak back-firing. I have previously replaced the CPS which did not correct the problem. I realize it has been several years since I have hit the forum with this issue however, if anyone out there can join in the conversation with tips, advice or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate your input. i am now 84 years old and would like to take a ride through the South Alabama countryside in my Benz while i can still drive!!!!

take it to a benz indy who has star diagnostic. They will be able to pull codes and know exactly what the problem is

I had a similar issue with my '93 500SL. In the end I did two things. Replaced and coils and pulled the intake and renewed the intake manifold gaskets. Here is a procedure from the 500E board on how to remove the intake and replace those gaskets.

https://www.500eboard.co/forums/thre...-renewal.8880/

Hope this helps.

NO codes displayed, no CEL but, when I pulled distributor caps mucho moisture, burned contacts on cap and arc trails. This has happened before and I replaced caps and rotors. How do we seal these caps from getting moisture in them. There are vents on the bottom of the caps. What goes with them? Does some moisture enter the cap through the rotor adapter? Where is the PVC and/or EGR components. I would like access to Terry's parts location data base but don't know how to reach it.
