1991 300SL stalls when warm

1991 300SL Convertible (97,000 miles) stalled out after being driven about 20 minutes. Started up right away, but stalled as soon as put in drive. Had to have it towed, but mechanic can find nothing wrong.
Rarely driven - only about 1000 miles a year.
Scanned forum and found possibles: fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump. Occasionally, the car is hard to start when it is warm. Adding that as a symptom includes the following possibilities from the forum: ceramic insulator at the base of the distributor, Cam Shaft Sensor, and fuel pump.
Does anyone have recent experience with this problem? Thanks!

Maybe bad gas gumming thinks up, are you using Stabil or equivalent?

When it runs, does it run smooth or get shaky? If it runs and dies smoothly I'd be more apt to focus on fuel delivery. Fuel starvation will stall an engine gradually.

If it starts to shutter and shake I'd be more apt to focus on ignition system. Ignition problems tend to be more jerk like.

Did it stall under load (while driving/moving) or while idling (not moving)?

Intermittent problems are the most difficult. First thing I'd do is run a bottle of Techron through and/or have your fuel injectors and intake cleaned.

1994 AMG E60 (W124); 1997 SL600; & few others that I cannot fit in here
What about the fuel tank internal rusts clogging up fuel delivery and /or fuel lines and assembly clogs ?
