You might try disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes or so, and it may reset itself.
It sounds like you were having a good bit of fun. I track my SL55 and hit the rumble strips while apexing corners and generally fling it around and I have never had the roll bar deploy! Well Done!!

If I remember correctly resetting an R230 roll bar is the same as an R129 car. You press the "raise" roll bar button for a few seconds until you hear an audible "click". This resets the roll bar mechanism which then allows you to lower it.

I'll try it more controlled and maybe disconnect the battery as Dino suggested as a 2nd last resort -- Last resort being the dealer visit

I was at WOT in first gear when the front tires rolled over a slight hump in the road. Just at that moment, the tranny shifted to second with a kick like a bull and the rear wheels launched off the hump. Snap goes the roll bar followed by massive amounts of smoke from what used to be tire tread. A slight controllable drift through second and into third and back off the throttle and the best part of the ride was over. The rest of the ride was spent convincing my wife that I am not a complete moron and I didn't break the SL.

Thank god for the search function on this forum. Not only did I learn how to reset my roll bar, I learned that I must have yumped a bit

Roll BAR stuck in UP position.
I have 04 SL55 and today my roll bar got stuck in UP position.
I tried all what I have read in this thread but nothing works.
Holding "up" button, Holding "down" button.
NOTHING WORKS.
Like there is no power going to the roll bar.
It did no go up because of aggressive driving.
I left the car with the roll bar UP and when i stared in the morning It WON'T go down.
What should I do?

Mine appears to be fully raised, but when I start the car the dash states "raise roll bar". However, when I try to raise or lower the bar I just hear clicking. Even when I attempt to lower the roof, nothing happens and the roof won't go down.
Any ideas?

Thanks for solution
Thanks for the solution guys~!
I was going through an intersection over some railroad tracks and got all 4 wheels in the air. It was a hard landing and I was concerned about my ABS. That seems fine, but the roll bar was up. Like others I could not get it down, nor my top back up. I get the raise roll bar message on my dash.
I just followed the instructions. I pushed the raise roll bar button for a few seconds till I heard the click. Not very loud. Once I heard the click, I hit the lower button, and the bar came down and my top then was able to go back up.
Thanks again for the solution and not having to go to the dealer for such a simple fix!

I think the mechanism for the roll bar has 2 parts: a normal motor, and a much faster emergency activation mechanism, which is pneumatic? The pneumatics raise the bar much more quickly than the regular servo mechanism.
When you have the bar raised due to enthusiastic driving, it's this second pneumatic mechanism that has raised the bar. The first, motor-driven servo mechanism is still in the position with the bar closed. By holding the "up" button and waiting, you're actually moving the servo mechanism back to the raised position. Once raised, the appropriate bit of the servo mechanism re-engages with the bar, which is the audible click you hear.
Makes perfect sense.

^ The bar pops very quick in an emergency. Start looking between the seats and back toward where the roll bar is at about 52 seconds in. The vid is pretty funny too if you haven't seen it.

Roll Over Bar Stays Up! Please help???
Hi Guys, I am driving SL 500 R230 2007. Few days ago I accidentally jump over one island on the street which cut both of my tires on the passenger side. I then realized that the roll over bar deployed as well. I tried everything what you wrote previously and when I start the car I get the message "Raise Roll Over Bar" I push the raise button and hold it until the relay clicks and the motor stops rotating but it does not want to catch up with the roll bar and to be able lower it down. What can be the reason? Is there any manual lock which I can release? Or something is broken and I need to change it? Please let me know what do you think cause I try to find answers in internet and there is very little about the subject. Most of the mechanics does not have any idea and I don't want to fix it some how and in case of accident the bar not to open. Thanks in advance!

The roll bar in my 2008 SL550 deployed when I was fishtailing after slipping off the edge of the pavement at the Mid-Ohio track. Holding the raise bar button to re-engage the mechanism did not work. Fortunately the car was still under warranty. As I recall, a bracket got bent when the roll bar deployed and this had to be straightened out in order to lower the bar.
Fixing a roll bar that is stuck in the up position is not particularly easy because the top cannot be lowered with the bar in the up position. I believe the passenger seat and all of the trim panels in the rear of the car had to be removed to access the roll bar mechanics.
It's a good idea to raise the roll bar manually before you engage in any spirited driving or track the car.

YESS , thank you, worked perfect .. if not start engine, you can hear servo motor working til it reach the top, and catch up with with roll bar. is good idea if making spinn out ,around to raise the roll over bar first ..

Roll bar
This happened to me but nothing worked. In desperation and after a ridiculous quote from dealer saying I needed to replace the pump for my top. I checked a relay that was attached to the pump in the hood, it was bad, replaced it and have been good to go since.
