Has anyone been able to unplug a connector from the CAN bus?
Hi, folks,
I'm installing a SmartTop Vario roof mod on my 2007 SL550 and am having difficulties removing the connectors from the CAN bus that's behind the right seat under the storage compartment, next to the fuses.
I was able to unhook the bus module from the metal bracket under the storage bin, and I was able to take the plastic mounting bracket off of the bus. I now have two separate pieces -- the plastic mounting bracket/cover and the bus itself. Is there something else keeping the connectors in their sockets? Individual clips on each socket, or perhaps a third piece locking everything together? Or are the sockets just damn hard to unplug?
I've googled and searched the forums here and found nothing. I thought I'd start here, since it looks like each model has a different style bus (even if they use the same sockets). I wouldn't be surprised if it changed from year to year, either.
Thanks in advance,
Michael

Okay, nobody replied, but here's what I found. In the housing bracket for the connectors, there is a slot between each connector. The slot has a small square gap at the end. This is where the individual connectors lock into place. To unlock the individual connectors, I used a small hobby screwdriver that just fit into that square gap. This pushed back the little tab in the connector, allowing me to wiggle it out.

Just purchased a Smarttop module, and trying to install, but for the life of me, I can not get that Can Plus loose!!!!! I've been working on this thing for at least 2 hours, but can't wiggle, pry, etc. to get it loose. I see levers on the left side of the can plug, and I've pushed and pulled with a screwdriver, but they won't budge. Pls help!!!!! What am I doing wrong?!?

Thanks for the reply! I'm at Step 5 in the instructions - trying to remove the individual plugs to finalize installation. There are squares on the back of the long CAN Plug Distributor - do I stick the screwdriver in those squares to loosen the individual plugs?!?

OK - got them loose!!! Now when I plug the module in, no lights whatsoever, which means it's not getting power. I grounded the module to the back screw that holds the whole BUS pkg together on the right side. I connected the other wire to the purple fuse box with ORG/GRN wire. I''m gonna get this working!!!!

SUCCESS!!! I finally got the connections straight, hooked it up, started flashing red 3X, found the right plug, and the much welcomed "green flashing" started!!! Can't wait to

You're lucky!! I got it unattached, however, something is holding the wires tightly, and after CAUTIOUS pulling, one plug popped out of it's holder, which, obviously, concerned me. Is there something I need to unattach in order to free the canbus wiring enough so that I can remove it from inside of the box? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!
