Question Removing cats on R230

Guys,

Can ANYONE provide experience on merely removing the cats ..NOT the "mufflers" on the R230 and dealing with their four O2 sensors ? ( two front and two rear) While cutting and straight piping (gapping) the new spaces where the 'old' cats were might seem simple ...It appears the MAIN issue to solve - is dealing with - short circuiting the (now disconnected) O2 sensors data and avoiding the CEL lights that will illuminate... I understand there is some long plug attachments that can be attached to bypass the (now) missing O2 sensor data and keep the CEL lights OFF.

ANY info GREATLY appreciated ..

Hi

So what's the difference when the CATs are removed. More power better sound or?

My SL65 with Kleemann ECU+TCU tune sounds really nice with mufflers removed.

Removing the CATs

I removed both CATs and my enjoyment of the car has greatly improved. The resulting sound gives a great V8 grunt without being too loud. There is a sweet spluttering sound at low revs with a deep and powerful sounding exhaust when pulling away. I've had no problems with error messages and the car has passed the emmission tests without issue. My view is that the four CATs are an over-design. If you are overly concerned about the enevironment you shouldn't be driving a 5 Litre V8. If they rattle...take'em out.

On the SL65 I've heard some people saying cutting the 2 cats will make HP difference and some say it wont, but this being a turbo car I would think so. From my experince I did gain HP on the dyno with my catless downpipes but my downpipes are 3 inch, as well as my entire custom exhaust.

However with a 3 inch fully custom exhaust the airboxes in my car were restricting air, and I was loosing HP. I had to toss those out and do a custom intake to see higher gains (564 rwhp with just ecu tune to 638 rwhp with exhaust, intake, ecu)
