2005 SL,35K MILES...THE CAR HAS TO BE OPENED BY PRESSING THE KEY ON THE PASSANGER SIDE;IT WONT WORK ON THE DRIVERS SIDE AND HOLDING THE HANDLES WONT UNLOCK THE DOORS EITHER.THE KEY THEN HAS TO BE INSERTED INTO THE IGNITION SLOT AS THE STARTER BUTTON WONT START THE CAR,A "KEY NOT DETECTED" SIGN APPEARING WHEN THIS IS ATTEMPTED.BOTH BATTERIES ARE FINE,HAD THEM CHECKED AND ALSO CAREFULLY REPLACED KEY BATTERY.ALL OPERATIONS ON THE CAR WORK FINE,ROOF,WINDOWS,PHONE,LOWERING etc. IS THIS A SENSOR PROBLEM OR DO I JUST NEED A NEW KEY? LOOKS LIKE A TRIP TO THE DEALER EITHER WAY...THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS.

Hi.
I just today got finished at the dealer programing a new key. The price was crazy $ 375.00 for the key $ 165.00 for programing!!! This has to be done with there Star computer program, no getting around it. I hope it is not a key for you, good luck.

Thanks Brian...I just returned from overseas so the cars problem is still unresolved...took it to an independant garage who deals with a lot of Mercs but he was stumped also & suggested the dealer.He said because the key is working on the doors it SHOULD start the engine by the shifter-button start but it doesn`t....oh well.

That's, exactly the problem I had. Sadly enough, you have to go to the dealer, or to someone that has the Star program.
