DIY CF interior 2009 SL550

Well, in my quest to get rid of the wood grain trim and not spend $$$$…I have decided to use the 3M 1080 wrap and see if I like the look before a significant investment…I started with the passenger door and I will look at it for a while before going the rest of the way…pretty easy and I don't think it looks too bad. It took about 2 hours, but I have never taken this door off, and have only played with the 3M 1080. I payed about $28 for a 60X12 sheet and that will do the 2 doors and center console, I will keep posting pics as they get done, and let you know of any hang ups.

FWIW - the DCTM post on interior removal was spot on…no problems and I don't think I broke anything (thanks for the post).

Before, cleaned with isopropyl alcohol…

After…about 30 minutes worth of stretching…

Back in the door panel…

Close up of door handle…this was one of the most challenging places (curves)…

All buttoned up…

Let me know what you think…any advice is appreciated, and still looking for a black shifter boot…don't want to dye the one I have in case I want to go back to original…

Hi Wes.

If if someone knows the original it just looks somehow embarassing.
But its important that you like it, not us...

Cheers Frank

I'm not a big CF fan but I think you did a good job on that door panel.

Thanks all - I think I am going to knock out the driver's door and the center console today…I will post pics.

As Frank_S500 said, I can tell the difference as I have had CF interiors before, I just wanted to see if I like the combination with the beige interior before I dropped $1000 plus for the real deal.

I will put this in, live with it for a while and see if I like it…if so, I will make the move for the real CF interior.

Still trying to figure out what to do with the steering wheel…thinking of just putting a leather cover on it for now...

I think that looks great and you did a fantastic job on applying the film. Any tips or tricks on applying?

As for tricks and tips…be patient and get some extra film to practice with…it is relatively inexpensive. Make sure you are in a CLEAN dust free work area...

I have shot paint and laid fiberglass before so I wasn't totally in the dark…and I watched a You Tube video where a guy wrapped a bowl (probably the most difficult due to the curvature).

I used my wife's hairdryer and let the vinyl sit in the sun for a bit to make it pliable, but other than that it was straightforward.

Today will be the hardest of the pieces (the center console) and I will let you know how that goes.

Center console…

It was a little more challenging than the doors, but I expected it to be…larger area, holes and bends…I have a few creases, but overall I can live with the result.

It took about 2 hours…5 minutes to get the console out, the rest messing with the trim.

I accidentally flipped the weave on the ashtray door, I can live with it, not taking anything apart to fix it.

I definitely like the look and will be going to real CF in the near future...

You can see where I flipped the weave on the ashtray door…also the opening for the ashtray was challenging as there is nothing to dress the opening. I think that if the wrap shrinks, it will pull away from here first.

The bottom corners we tough too…but I think the leather trip will cover most of that...

Although I personally prefer the original trim, I have to say that you have made a great job of this and it does look good - well done!

Alright,
The interior is done…all said about 5 hours…but I was going slow because I haven't done it before.

I like the look, I will say, you can't compete with the real CF though…thinking about buying the real deal shortly.

Lessons learned..do this when it is warm…the vinyl works better. I would also say that you can remove the pieces and have them professional wrapped for about $200-ish plus material, I just did this to kill some time, and see if I like it, I might even remove it again and have it wrapped to fix the few things I goofed up.

Have some door and trim clips on hand…I didn't break any, but it would be easy to…and you don't want to stop for a $0.50 part.

thanks to the folks at DCTM Sports for this post…it was an earlier year, but everything was on point and it was very helpful.

https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-...ior-trims.html

I am going to wrap the steering wheel with a black leather cover, and am springing for the real CF shift knob, just waiting to find the boot.

All in all I am pleased, I will see how it holds up to the sun (I spend a LOT of time with the top down).

Any question, drop me a line and I will get to you as soon as possible.

Console was EASY to remove…just be careful with the cup holder fronts (you have to pop them off) to get the console out. Total cost of interior redo was $30 and 5 hours...

My car SL350 2010 has the same interior as your's originally had, so it's interesting to see the difference.

It looks so well finished that there must be a part of you thinking "I'm going to leave this CF finish as is..."

Thanks for the comments…

I know where the mistakes are, so I am the sort of person that will anchor on those small errors until they get fixed…but I do like it. Waiting to see what the shifter/boot/steering wheel looks like.

I will keep everyone posted.

I have an 07 with the same color interior and I need to replace the wood, I haven't been a big fan of CF and didn't think it would look good with the tan but yours is nice.

I would think that you could go with the solid colors and it would be a little easier to do…I thought about doing just black (like the black piano).

If you didn't think you could tackle it, like I said, Tampa's premier vinyl wrapping guy was going to charge me about $200 and the results would have been flawless.

With an 07 you have tons more options WRT steering wheels and shifters (by tons I mean they are available)…so you could really do it right.

It really comes down to how much money you want to spend. I also want to keep the original trim…the next buyer might not like the CF.

Love the look. Meticulous work that is for sure. I know myself...I would do this and just not be satisfied...would have to 'pop' for the real deal (real cf). Thanks for posting...Mark

If I decide to go the CF route I would go with black.

I believe the SL63 style key-less go **** would be a great compliment. Well done for a true DIY project!
