Radio Swap
Hello,
I recently bought a 2003 SL500 with Comand and CD Changer. No phone. Like many others here, I want Bluetooth and XM/Sirius radio. I'm new to this forum and will appreciate your feedback. Does anyone have any experience with this?

It looks interesting... no installation instructions shown for SL.

I've done that conversion and I'm very happy. I have an 03 SL55 and I think it's the best mod I've made. I'm not sure about Sat Radio but I seem to remember that there is a module that's an add on. The SD card has an 8GB limit but that doesn't bother me at all. Bluetooth works fine and even though there is no voice activation, all works well.
I didn't replace the AMP and I still think the music quality is good. I'm a bit tone deaf mind you so you may want to add that.
As I said, all in all I'm very happy and except for the improvements with features, etc I don't notice that it's aftermarket.

I have a different aftermarket unit (Kenwood) in my 04 SL500. It has all the gadgets...bluetooth for phone/music, backup camera, additional inputs, satellite radio, nav. Apparently it was an expensive upgrade, at least at the time a few years ago and in this year/model. It is nice though. I give up the station and nav info in the instrument cluster but honestly do not miss it. Seems like a good tradeoff to me.

I've seen enough negative stiff about the Chinese head unit to reject that idea. The 2004 Comand unit has a Sat button and I see them on eBay. What do I need in addition to the head unit to make Satellite radio work?

Seriously, all this negative stuff about the Chinese head unit? Wonder how many of all those saying negative stuff actually have had one installed or listened or played with one?

I appreciate your feedback. I took the info I had to two different shops with MB experience and neither would consider it. If I could install it myself I might feel differently, but I'm not that skilled. I thought that the 2004 Comand head unit might be an easier solution for me. Hopefully, someone here will know how to make that work.

there's quite a bit of info on the E class forum talking about the poor quality of these units...
