Could be the wrong screws...
There are 2 sets of screws for the tunnel section. Small ones (T10?), right below the side trim panel, 3 each side, that hold the wood panel in place. They are hard to see.
The easy to see ones (T15?) are about 1" below the top edge of the trim panel. These screws are not the ones holding the top trim panel in place.
You will also need to remove the beverage holder cover plates (or the whole beverage holder) to pull the trim panel up.
You may need to access the 2 hidden screws (I can't remember if these need to be removed) from the front of the armrest glove box.
See attachments for help.
I just replaced my shift lockout with an aluminum part recently so I understand your troubles!
Note that you need to get under the car to release the shift linkage to complete this task. Put that car on jack stands, or if you are lucky, put it on a lift.

Part source...
Got mine from an Aussie company: http://www.monoglobal.com.au/
About $150 with exchange and shipping.
Can be found for less on eBay, but no idea of quality. Search "Mercedes Selector Lever Aluminum".
