Check Engine Light - Catalytic Converter

So the check engine light comes on. I bring it to the local independent. He pulls the codes and it reads that "efficiency of the left and right catalytic converter is insufficient". The independent told me that he has never seen two catalytic converters go bad at the same time, but wanted to charge me $2k to replace both converters. I passed and took the car home and paid him his diagnostic charge of $224. Has anyone encountered this issue? if it happens again, i will bring it to another tech for a second opinion.

What is the year and mileage of your SL? What are the actual codes the indy pulled? Hard to believe both Cats have failed at once. Each down pipe has two Cats each for a total of 4. The front two Cats have an O2 sensor forward and rear. Item #40 on the diagram.

The rear Cats are downstream and not being monitored so they shouldn't be a part of the diagnosis, however, they are an integral part of the down pipe and will be part of the whole ***'y.

More information is needed for others to comment.

Good Luck,

Bob

Mercy - me, thanks for your comments. I have a 2006 with about 69,200 miles on the car. The indy told me that he has never seen the situation where 2 cats go bad at the same time but wanted to charge me $2K to replace both cats. The codes he pulled were P207E-001 (left cat) and P200B-001 (right cat).

He rest the computer and so far, 400 miles and no check engine light.

Do you think that since he is using software from 1999, he misdaignosed the problem?
