Pulsing and whine from trunk

Would someone please help me identify this part (pic attached). It's in the trunk, left of the spare. This morning it was making a very noticeable pulsing sound, and when I opened the trunk it made a loud whine, then stopped? Any ideas?

I keep the rear battery charged using a CTEK 7002.

Background: I'm working on bringing new life into a 2003 SL500 roadster, with 80K. It needs a new ABS actuator and I'm removing the aftermarket sound system. (Dude put a monitor in the steering wheel, to give you some idea), to each his own, but not my style. So I'm working through each issue as they are identified.

Also, good place to get a new steering wheel?

VIN: WDBSK75FX3F013668 if that helps identify interior color, to me it just looks Grey.

I believe that is the hydraulic pump that controls the raising and lowering of the convertible hardtop.

Regarding a replacement steering wheel (I assume you mean used) I've always found everything I needed at car-part.com. It is an on-line salvage yard and they have everything from steering wheels to long-blocks.

Good luck

Thanks for the info, the pump has been quiet ever since, so I hope it isn't going bad. I'll check car-part.com for the steering wheel (yep I'm on a used budget!)

It's the top pump...

The part number was a dead giveaway...

Pump should only run when you move the console switch to raise/lower the top.
If it runs 'by itself' there may be other issues with the top and all of the limit switches.

You need to post pictures of this Steering Wheel TV System!

Check and make sure you have fluid in Roof System, hopefully its nothing, when car wakes all kinds of noises can be heard if you listen close.

Thanks for the tips, I'll give the system a check.

As far as the monitor in the steering wheel, see attachment, there it is.....It was actually functional! I have since removed the monitor from the steering wheel. I also don't know the status of the Airbag??????????? However, one fix at a time, I'll get there

Hey, a lot of race steering wheels have screens on them. Could be useful if you tracked the car for lap times or other info.

I think it may not be legal. Especially if you are watching a movie at the time when you crash into the back of a lorry.
