SL 500 ANY YR.

ABC,ABC ,ABC For God sakes. Bottom line is this is way to expensive to maintain and even more to repair. If it isn't that it's something else. Bottom line, this type of car is unreliable and WAY to costly to keep just because it looks cool.

Why do you think a 90K car is worth 16K if your lucky . Ever heard of a Chrysler mini van?

Anyone who tells you they haven't worked on this car more than a few times or spent an arm and leg to have someone else do it for them is not being honest. Lying would be the word.

Sell these cars and buy a good car......... I'm tired of lying on the ground every other month to fix some little or big issue just so I can get to work on time. I HAVE 30K ON THE $%^#*( thing. I ask you. Should I even have to touch it?????????????????

Sorry to hear your bad experience. If you get to spend that much every month fixing it then the previous owner did not take care of the car at all. He really just killed it.

This is a car worth driving if you know what you're buying. People here will agree that it worth having it. And 99% of owners around the world will too.

If a van is what you compare it to then a SL is definitely not for you. Good luck with your new car

To each their own. Most craftsmen get satisfaction from tools in their hands.

I just spent quality time using my SDS to identify any faults, replace the alarm horn, drop in a parking sensor and adjust settings on my SL55. I'll work through the issues until the 'f' & 'F' stored codes on the SDS show no more, then enjoy the rest of summer ripping around top down.

This model is a supercar in technology, and this cutting edge technology pushes the reliability envelope. If you want Honda reliability, buy a Honda. If you want F1 technology, and "nothing but the best" in a moon rocket experience, buy a flagship Mercedes. Maintain it well, and it wins hearts all day long. Ignore it and it will eat you for lunch.

2003 sl 500
I've only had mine 4 months but I am impressed by the fit and finish of the car, and it's ride quality with ABC. Tremendous pep (SL 500) with the 5 speed tranny. Mine is a 2003 and I realize clearly the expense of parts but I really want to keep this car for a good while. I guess I will see how it goes.

Tme is a wonderful thing

It is one thing to change oil or air filters. Be real man. this is not a supercar. BMW 3 series can out run them and out maneuver them. 30K miles is nothing.

FIT/ FINISH

Seriously ?? Take a look around at the gaps on the door pockets. Look at the cheap materials. Would you honestly pay 90K for this. You don't have to because they are only worth 1/4 that!!!!!!!!! Mercedes made something that looked like a super car. That's it. It almost weighs 5000 lb. what supercar weighs that??? A pick up weighs that!!!!!!!

Be Honest

All most people want from these cars is a weekend project that maybe they can look rich on Monday if their still not working on it.

Then maybe next week will be better. SL coups are basically Harley Davidsons will 4 wheels. Hope you have a garage and a lot of patients and ALOT OF DIPOSABLE CASH.

Oh yeah try to trade one in at any dealer. GOOD luck. Be prepared to get your feeling hurt.

People here replaced the whole ABC system - and i think that's a little more complicated than just the "oil and air filter"

Comparing to a 3 series? Wrong car again, buddy

People paid more than 90k for it at the time, and nobody complained about how much it decreased in price over time

And you're right again - they made something that looks like super car Where will you find a super car for 90k? or 20+ at the moment? Show me some so i could buy one

Wanna complain on the car? We're not here to support you on that This is a forum for people that love the car, not hate

I'll say again that i'm sorry for your bad experience, but move along. Or you're going to complain the rest of your life on this car?

Cheers

Ditch the ABC. It really does make it unreliable over the long haul. There are some good options out there that will make the car pretty reliable. This being one of them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Coilover-Conversion-Kit-Mercedes-R230-SL500-2002-2006-OEM-Including-Core-Deposit-/191375580043?hash=item2c8edf9b8b&vxp=mtr

Wow, that's something new! Did you happen to buy one for yourself?
Overall i see the point of it - less worries - less expenses, and so on.
But doesn't it take away the SL thing from the car? If i would happen to keep the car forever i'd be interested for sure. Moreover i saw an SL500 for sale for 12,500 yesterday with 100k miles - this would be the 1st thing to do on it.
Have you tried it out?

I haven't done it but there are others on the forum who have. Nothing but positive. I'm waiting on a kit for the 600. There is not one yet available.

Yo, "Sinned," most folks here have been in love with SLs since they were kids, and realized that the price of this love affair is steep. The R230 is the most gorgeous of the breed. Most beautiful women are high maintenance by nature, and the men who love them both know the price and gladly pay for the privilege of the experience. If you walked into this relationship with stars in your eyes, don't blame the broad! She delivers on all counts. I'm knocked-out in love with my Ruby and do whatever she asks. She's that good!

Honestly, the lack of miles (under 30K on what is- at least!- a 7 or 8 year old car) is a big warning sign. With those low miles, it's reasonable to assume the car sat for extended periods, and that's not good for any car.

May i not agree with your statement? Most of the cars i owned were 8 y.o.+ with somewhere 40k or less mileage. Never had any problems with any of the cars - happened to own about 10 in last 3 years.

Moreover the one i owned before the SL500 was a SLK320 from 2001 with 15k miles at the time of purchase. Drove the car for 2 years and sold it with 23k miles - regular maintenance and nothing else.

Low mileage does raise a little of concern when it comes to all rubber parts in a car, but i am willing to take my chances. Last purchase - 2005 SL500 with 22k miles. 6 months in - still drives like new. Maybe it's just me that lucky?
