2003 SL AC Temperature difference left and Right

I noticed today that my temperature out of the RH AC outlets is quite a bit warmer than the LH side. It was 104 out today and whether set at 72 (both sides) or full cold, the RH side never gets as cold. I cycled the temp control from full cold to full hot and it appears that the temp door moves and changes outlet temperature but just not fully cold. I have a Star computer and I wonder if it is possible to re-calibrate the temp doors. I can probably poke around the menus but wonder if anyone has done this.

if the temp doors are off, the star will tell you that when you run the diagnostic check. I know the w211 have a variable AC compressor that is on all the time and I assume the R230 does as well. The symptoms you are seeing are the exact same I had on my E55 and the problem with it was nothing with door functions, but rather that the freon was low. In theory the only way to properly fill is to have a shop drain the system down and refill based on weight of freon, since standard gauges will not be that accurate due to the variable compressor.

It was a low freon level. However, it was easy to determine how much it took to bring it up to the right level. I have a good set of Ac Gages and a variable compressor has no effect on how to charge the system. Most new cars have variable displacement compressors and it is no reason to keep it from being a do-it -yourself project..

a set of AC gauges may be able to measure what the low side pressure is correctly, but it can NOT measure what the charge level is since the variable compressor is changing what the low side pressure is itself based on demand.

I'd suggest reading this which specifically states why AC gauges are not to be used for checking the charge level of a variable compressor system

Only a fixed compressor AC system can be charged with gauges. Variable compressors must be charged via weight, usually within +/- .2 lbs
